Eating in Iceland

Hi can anyone recommend places to eat in Reykjavik? Appreciate most places will be very expensive but if anyone has eaten anywhere slightly more reasonable and would recommend that would be great. Family of four - kids are teens. Thank you

There was a fish restaurant near the harbour I liked that was reasonably priced. More varied menu than a fish and chip shop, I liked the fish pie. It was quite expensive generally.

There's a burger stall in the little piazza near the tourist office. Otherwise eat as big a breakfast as you can at your hotel and pick up snacks from the supermarkets.
The last time we went a meal for 4 doubled in price when we bought a bottle of wine: so bear that in mind.
Just accept that a meal out will be expensive. The soups and seafood are better value than most other things.

Second @ODFOx, that burger bar is brilliant!

There's also a really cheap noodle bar not far from the Penis Museum, same side of the road. That was excellent too.

Big Lebowski bar - some of the best burgers I've ever eaten! Great for teens.

Thank you! Husband and I have been trying to remember what it was called!

Lovely burgers and milkshakes 😋

Iceland is one of the few countries that does not have Macdonalds

Puffinshop · 18/09/2023 18:09

Lebowski is definitely a good burger 👍

Flatey for pizza.

Just Wingin' It - stupid name but great chicken wings with a huge selection of sauces. Quite reasonable prices imo.

I love the Mexican food at Tres Locos but it is rather expensive. There are also great tacos next door to Kofinn Tómasar frænda, which are cheaper and you can eat them in Kofinn.

If you do want McDonald's it does exist but not 'officially'. It is called Metro now.

Try the food halls (mathöll is the Icelandic word) - you can get all sorts in them.

Deig / Le Kock is nice.

Ban Thai always used to be excellent for Thai food but it's a long time since I was there.

Grill Market, Fish Market, Austur-Indíafélagið and Sushi Social are what I would count as nice fancy, without being the silly top tier. The sort of places I would go for a birthday. If you want to have one fancier night.

This place is great, loads of choice. We actually didn’t find evening food as expensive as we anticipated, possibly due to prices rising so much in the UK. I took some freezer bags and did cheese sandwiches from breakfast for lunch.

Icelandic street food is good for lamb stew in a bread bowl. They’ll refill it as many times as you like (if you’re hungry enough).

Brilliant thanks everyone x

Reykjavik kitchen was amazing! Our favourite meal in Iceland.

We also liked:

  • Dill (expensive as first Michelin starred restaurant in Iceland but worth it)
  • Old Iceland
  • Sandholt for brunch
  • Emilie and the Cool Kids for brunch
  • Lava at the Blue Lagoon (if you're going)
Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 19/09/2023 10:11

Messinn for seafood

Askur, Shalimar (Pakistani restaurant), Caruso (high end Italian), 101 Bistro
