Help I need some travel advice! Where is nice in the US in August? Not too hot and humid...

We have to go to a wedding in west virginia (ffs) at the end of July. As it will cost us £600+ apiece to get there we may as well holiday in the US once we are there.

Could anyone suggest some good holiday destinations for that time of year. It is clearly not somewhere I would normally choose to go in August! Alternatively we could come back and holiday in Europe but it seems silly really.

So

We are two + a 5yo girl.

She LOVES swimming in the sea so that is our first requirement. It must be nice and warm and sunny but not too humid.

We like nature, smallish places with good vibe, nothing big and modern and isolated (by isolated I mean we would like to be able to walk to beach, shop, bar etc though realise this may not be poss)

There could potentially be a lot of us if we can find the right location. We don't need one huge house though, could take a few in the same area.

Please help me!

Isn't it as humid as all hell in August though?

I'd go for Folly Beach, in South Carolina, or similar, which is on the coast. (I went through there once, when I was a teenager. There were houses on the beach on stilts. I fell in love.) I don't think it's that humid on the coast, although I'd check ahead a bit.

You could go up the coast a lot, Maine or whatever wouldn't be humid, but of course that's a huge trip.

If you want a big place...

CountessDracula · 04/03/2008 11:04

Don't mind an internal flight if necessary

Didn't I find you a house in Cape Cod, or was it someone else?

NotQuiteCockney · 04/03/2008 11:05

Hmmm, it does sound like it's humid there, but on the sea you'd probably be ok?

We had a fab time last summer at Wrightsville Beach - near Wilmington in North Carolina - see here. The beaches are fabulous and people are great. BUT swimming in the sea is not always recommended along that coast because of the currents, so look out for somwehere with a pool as well, if possible. There is also loads to do, we had a great time with our ds, who was only 2 at the time, but very adventurous.

Another hidden gem in Virginia is Smith Mountain Lake - we go there most summers in August, as my parents own a flat there - it is fantastic and sooooooo relaxing. But only if you want long walks, quiet, swimming, barbacues. Not a party town type of place. More info here.

here. we remted the house next door (the house at the back of the picture). It is lovely, steps down to a private beach, lovely little village with lots of little art gallery/shops etc, really relaxing, great seafood. We were there end of August beginning of sept and the weather was perfect. The water is calm, so fab for small children. You would need an internal flight though, or a long drive!

Smith Mountain Lake looks great!

Never been to either of these places personally, but I hear they are lovely:

LL is correct - most anywhere on the East Coast will be humid in August.

CountessDracula - let me know if you need any info, I know that part of Virginia quite well.

TBH, you will definitely have a great holiday, wherever you choose.

I have also been to the Outerbanks in North Carolina on holiday - very nice and beautiful, but quite exclusive as well. You can put a sticker on your car - OBX - which is seen as distinguished. My family stick to the West of Virginia, more our style....

needmorecoffee · 04/03/2008 11:48

Oregan/Idaho and the north west will be ok. Virginia/The Carolinas are unbelievably humid. You sweat buckets just walking to the car, its awful.
Maine might be ok but we drove up there once and the whole State was passing out in 100F weather and humidty you could wring water out of the air.
I hate humidity. Nothing in the UK prepares you for it! For it still being 90F at 11pm at night.
We lived in Virginia for 3 years.

GryffinGirl · 04/03/2008 12:00

it will be humid in-land in the south at that time of year, but can't recommend the Georgia coast and barrier islands enough. The sea breeze and sea swimming are great and they are very geared up for families - we went with friends who had children then. We went to Little St Simon's Island and loved it, but probably Jekyll Island is more fun for kids

sophiewd · 04/03/2008 12:07

I would love to go to Cape Cod or around that area, great beaches, whale/dolphin watching, nice small towns

SubRosa · 06/03/2008 22:23

If you've got the time/money and don't mind flying across America, northern California is well worth a visit. Even in August, Yosemite is tolerable, as is San Francisco. Some of the Pacific Coast beaches around Monterey are pleasant, more like Cornwall than the US.
