Cheap flights - toiletries

Hi, we are going to Tenerife for half term and I'm trying to cut the spend down as much as I can without scrimping on the enjoyment too much. One thing I planned to do for ease and cost was to only take hand luggage.

We are travelling with Ryan air and haven't done this before but it's saves us cash and just makes the flight so much easier without having to do check in and wait for baggage.

I was thinking of other things I need to be more savvy about that I'm usually crap at and thought of, for example, taking plenty of Alidi suncream rather than buying expensive stuff that we then run out of and then buying even more expensive stuff in Tenerife.

I then suddenly realised - shit we won't be able to take normal toiletries if only taking hand luggage!

So I'm now wondering if I should organise one check in bag which will cost us £80 ish I think which I begrudge to take all the toiletries as otherwise we will likely waste that on buying stuff over there.

Any tips?

Thanks x.

You can buy full size airside so as long as you leave room for it you can take it in board once through security. Obviously not as cheap as Aldi but you can get boots soltan etc.

Smiler1972 · 13/09/2023 21:22

Also check out the in flight magazine online before you fly in case they have ultra sun or p20 you can buy on the flight.

cruffinsmuffin · 13/09/2023 21:23

Depending on the airport you can pre order from boots to pick up post security - you get the online prices too then!

FloweryName · 13/09/2023 21:23

You could just buy boots own brand when you get through security.

mintbiscuit · 13/09/2023 21:23

But sunscreen at airport. Everything else overseas is as cheap here

AnyFucker · 13/09/2023 21:23

Buy them from Boots after going through security

Sun cream is expensive in Spain. Everything else is a lot cheaper - shampoo/conditioner etc and bigger bottles.

We are doing the same. I’m taking suncream, and then buying basics in the airport.

I flew through Manchester at the weekend and Boots do a click and collect service airside. Not as cheap as Aldi but cheaper than airport prices.
hand luggage toiletries has to be in 100ml bottles or less and each person gets a bag each. I decant suncream and aftersun, take solid shampoo bar, soap instead of shower gel, travel toothpaste, make up wipes instead of cleanser etc. it’s faff but absolutely doable if you get organised. Can also refill your water bottle from free taps airside

ps. London City and Teeside airport have scrapped the 100ml rule- other airports will follow as they upgrade their scanners

… assuming you can find it overseas?

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 13/09/2023 21:46

You can buy sun cream in boots at the airport and any bigger toiletries you need. Once through security you can just carry it onto the plane in a carrier bag no hassle.

or get 100ml bottles you can decant everything into. I had a family holidays a few years ago with only hand luggage and managed to get enough of everything for 4 of us into those little 100ml bottles.

Orangello · 14/09/2023 09:39

decant your cosmetics into smaller bottles. Each person ha a liquid allowance, I have found that to be quite sufficient. Shampoo-shower gel etc can be bought locally. And get UV suits for kids so you don't need that much sunscreen to start with.

ovenchips · 14/09/2023 09:56

@Madamlulu It's not quite what you were asking about, but did you know that Ryanair now charges for hand luggage that goes in overhead lockers?
Only thing you won't pay any extra for is a smallish bag of very precise proportions that you have to store at your feet on plane.
We flew Ryanair recently and did one checked-in suitcase to cover three of us, plus small bags on plane. Worked a bloody treat as we shoved all our liquids and heavier items in hold luggage. Am personally converted and loved not having to decant liquids into 100ml bottles etc.
Might be worth calculating total costs of one piece of checked-in luggage v hand luggage for everyone?
Enjoy Tenerife!

I wasn't having a dig at the Spaniards, just thinking that if you want specific brands you might not find them abroad

listsandbudgets · 14/09/2023 10:26

@NearlyMonday True it may be a slightly different brand but they tend to do the same job - and anyway the OP may discover something she really likes

Georgyporky · 14/09/2023 10:37

If you buy full-size toiletries after security, remember you won't be able to bring them back in hand luggage.

thedevilinablackdress · 14/09/2023 13:10

There are Aldis in Tenerife OP - you may be close to one?
