Ski/snowy holidays

Hi my kids and I have never done a ski holiday before. They're 8 and 11. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for somewhere that isn't too far from the airport and has fun things to do other than skiing. I'd like it to be easy as it's just me and the kids. My DH passed away during the summer and I want to book a holiday for just after Christmas as something to look forward to after Christmas as obviously it'll be a tough one this year. I've looked at France and it definitely seems to have the fun stuff but seems to be very far from airports. And expensive. Someone recommended Solden to me. That seems to be easily accessible and a nice distance from the airport but I'm not seeing much fun stuff for kids there.
So if anyone had a resort they could recommend and even better the name of a hotel I'd appreciate it.

We once went to Tenerife after Christmas. We went to see a family friend.
Out dc loved the 3 kings parade with camels.
We visited the lunar volcanic landscape.
It was also pleasantly warm and sunny.

It wasn't somewhere I would have chosen but my preconceived notions were quite wrong in the central part of the Island where we were staying.
It absolutely wasn't Brits abroad.

We did hire a car to help get around.

I'd go to Norway or Finland. You can dip in and out of skiing more easily there, and there's plenty to do. Not cheap though!

But if you fancy skiing, then why not go for it! It would be a great way to spend a week at Christmas time.

BUT... snow has been very unpredictable in early season in recent years, so you'd be better going somewhere snowsure. That generally meams higher, and therefore further from an airport. And most likely more of a ski resort than a town in its own right (so I'd avoid places like Zell am See, Morzine etc, that are lower altitude). I think Obergurgl is supposed to be snowsure and beginner friendly, and the Dolomites have a good record too. But it's something to bear in mind.
