Morrocco

We’ve woken up to the sad news of the earth quake in Morrocco. I can see there is a significant loss of life and damage to the buildings.

We are due to travel to Marrakesh in 6 weeks. I’ve said to my husband I think we should cancel…as I thought the best thing to do for place when there is disaster is to stay away. My husband thinks we should still go if Possible and says they need tourism for the income.

What is the ethical thing to do in this situation? I recall people on the Greek islands with bad wild fires saying they wanted tourist to stay away.

In addition, the hotel has a collection at reception we will be donating to, as well as tipping the staff highly while we are here.

Thanks for the update, we go this weekend. Good to hear someone else is there and that things seem ok so far. We have a lot of time to fill now as obviously the trip to the Atlas mountains is off the cards so looking for some ideas. We have a week to fill and just a food tour booked. Hoping we can enjoy despite the heartache for many.

I’d probably go. Just seen an article which will be useful hope this link works it’s on the Independent site

coastal areas unaffected. Marrakesh is broadly open for business.

We are also booked to go to Marrakech in about a month's time and I feel very torn about it, as well as guilty about worrying about a holiday when people have faced so much devastation. Like @AlbaAurora we have booked our lights and hotel separately, and insurance won't pay anything. Please do let us know what it's like @AlbaAurora .

This is the same for us. Really torn as to what to do for the best x

@AlbaAurora Just wondered how you're finding things in Marrakech and whether you've found any trips etc that you can do?

Hi, arrived a day late after a 28 hour journey from hell with Ryanair but that's a different story!

Been out in the Medina all day to day and all normal. There are some side streets closed and bits with rubble cordoned off so definite evidence of it still around. Some sites still closed for assessment but some open but it's very busy out.

Still considering if we might do a trip and where, will try to let you know.

I am Moroccan and I can tell you Moroccans would love to still see tourists coming.

There are some damage unfortunately. But more so in smaller villages or poorer areas where buildings are not as sturdy.
The infrastructure within the city itself including touristic attractions isn't visually damaged.

Sorry to hear you had a rubbish flight @AlbaAurora. Glad that you made it and I hope that you're having/had a great holiday! Just wondered if you ended up doing any trips or managed to get out of Marrakech at all? Also any tips for best things to do actually in Marrakech appreciated!

We went to the secret garden, marjorelle garden (need to book online), house of photography, and the Ben medressa school (all recommended and the Ben medressa is a stunning building) we also done a food tour.

We made a trip out to Jarjeer Mules as we are big animal lovers. It's a donkey sanctuary only half an hour away. We really struggled with the levels of animal abuse everywhere sadly.

Not to scare you but we both ended up with sickness which sort of spoiled it and it's still lingering back home. Please be extra careful with food and drink (we thought we were!)
