Hi
When we've been on holiday we've always managed to get a second room for ds e.g. an apartment or a suite but this time we're all in together.

Is this going to be a disaster?!? Will we need to sneak off to the bathroom/ balcony until he's gone to sleep??

What about if we hire a babysitter one night - what do they normally do if the child is asleep in the same room!?

Is ds going to twig we are in the same room and start expecting the same when we get home?
Any tips?

First of all what age is your DS and is he still in a travel cot ?

If so you might be able to put him in the bathroom that way you don't have to sit in pitch darkness all evening, although could be tricky if you need to go to the loo.

We have had babysitter in same room, although large living room and DS in the corner and he slept through.

Also if he is a bit older will sleep better than he used to so might not be the nightmare that you think it is.

Enjoy your hols.

Hi
he's 2.7 but still (just) in a cot so we could do that. It will be a cot provided by the hotel rather than our own travel cot.

I think as it will be quite warm we can always go and read on the balcony etc.

We don't go abroad now to avoid this!!
When we did, we generally managed to wedge the travel cot in the bathroom.
You can normally (depending on size of hotel) go to the bar etc for a drink with a baby monitor (but prob not in a huge hotel?).

it is a huge hotel so baby monitor not an option anyway.

Sometimes in a hotel room there is a sort of lobby area - i.e. you open the door to your room, and there's then another door into the bedroom. If that's the case then the travel cost could go in there?

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/03/2008 08:40

Where are you going/what is the hotel, by the way?

posieflump · 04/03/2008 08:41

I really wouldn't bother.
Book a nice self catering cottage in the UK instead.
Much more relaxing.

FrannyandZooey · 04/03/2008 08:42

we just sit quietly in half darkness until ds is asleep, then turn on a low light and read or cuddle
it is quite restful actually, we find that he usually wakes up early on holiday so getting an early night is a wise move

we have done loads of travelling in england with 3 of our kids and we mostly shared the same big room....the last big trip was in 2002 when ds1 aged 9 ds2 aged 7 and ds3 aged 2 ,generally on holiday they just do similar to us and if theyre tired early eve they go to sleep, rules are more relaxed and we actually quite enjoy it,we used to have meals out with them or a drink in our room at night whilst they played....we had a fine old time and for the past few years weve rented caravans at haven and the boys still end up with us mostly .....

rookiemater · 04/03/2008 10:56

Savescrabulous, could you ring the hotel up and see what room options are available? It might be that they have family type rooms with a bit more space so the cot could be jammed in a far corner, or they may offer suite options with a separate living area. Expensive but sometimes not prohibitively so. Do etll us where you are going.

SaveScrabulous · 04/03/2008 14:48

But posieflump what is relaxing about having to cook and shop etc just like at home!?

I've stayed in hotels loads of times with ds and love it - just never in the same room....!

rookie - that's what we've done in the past - had a suite with ds in the living room (we are pampered I know!) But they haven't got any suites left and actually at this place the premium for a suite is a fortune - sometimes I find it's only say 50% extra but here it's double or more.

We're going to the Royal Mirage, Dubai. Should be lovely and hot!

Dubai, wow, we are off to Majorca this year and I thought that was exotic.

Have to say these days that I do find it more relaxing going s/c. We then buy luxury meals from M&S, croissants for breakfast and go out for lunch so it isn't the dismal routine of cooking 3 meals a day.

Shame about the rooms, but you may find your DS sleeps better than he used to. I say this because I only managed 8 weeks with him in the room when newborn due to his constant snurfling squeaking etc etc and then any subsequent times we were forced to share a room he would wake up full of the joys of spring at 3.00am. However a couple of months a go at a relatives I had to share a room with him, our nephew had misguidedly volunteered, DS panicked when he woke up with someone he didn't know well and we ended up swapping rooms. DS actually slept fairly soundly until 7.30am. Wax earplugs help though.

I'm sure you will have a lovely time same room or not.

It's worth e-mailing the hotel to ask if they can suggest anything - if you keep them informed of your requirements they might be able to help. And you never know, there might be a last minute cancellation so that they can upgrade you.

It's always worth a try!
