We have a 11 month old who we would like to 'transport' without a pushchair. Any good backpacks you can recommend please?

We have this for our ds and its bloody fantastic!
You can unclip the reins part if you want. Our ds hated reins but loves this as he does'nt even know he is being held.

Bump! I'm interested in the answer too...
FWIW a friend has told me that the Little Life backpack is expensive, but very serious in a hillwalking kind of way (highly waterproof, lots of space for carrying other stuff), but has the disadvantage that it doesn't stand up by itself, whereas the Mothercare "cheapo" version (I think about £40) is not great in terms of quality and fit for the child, but does have the advantage of standing up by itself, and can serve as a mobile high chair. I'd personally like a combination of the two, with the added requirement of being able to put the backpack on and take it off with no other adult assistance, so if anyone has any experience of other models I'd love to know!

Vaude ones are a bit pricey, but good - comfortable and sturdy.

policywonk · 20/03/2008 20:48

At least one of the Vaude models stands up by itself. Sorry to be vague, we had ours second-hand and DP destroyed it by pouring battery acid over it in the garage

We've just got a Phil & Teds one from Boots. Seems pretty good so far. And, 1000 extra points, which was the deciding factor. And comes complete with rain hood etc

A Mei Tai is a very practical way of transporting older babies/toddlers as they fold up really small when not in use - the backpack type are a bit of a pain when the child isn't in them as they are bulky. You also don't have the body contact with them to know where they are looking.

I like the BabyHawk Mei Tais (as DS is older, he has Toddlerhawks) - very funky colours, supportive and comfy.

In terms of conventional backpacks, we do have a LittleLife one, that DH chose, bought from www.littletrekkers.co.uk who are very helpful. It does stand up by itself.

I can put both types on and off by myself - its a matter of practice really.

We have this one by Bushbaby. I love it, and so does DD (16 mo) - great for walking on rough surfaces, taking to the beach, can carry nappy stuff, drinks, snacks, etc. Wouldn't be without it.
