Formula Feeding 9month old in Majorca

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 02/03/2008 21:03

Finally booked holiday. Two weeks in Majorca end Aug by which time ds will be 9 month.

Thinking ahead to feeding. He should be on 2-3 bottles a day by then and having three meals a day.We are all inclusive in a good hotel so the food will be easy but thinking about the milk.

I was thinking about the sterilising and have posted on this before.I went to Paris when dd was 6 month and I cant remember sterilising in fact I know I didnt as we were in hotel.I think at the time (4 years ago) Health visitor said to stop sterlising at 6 months. Is this still the case?
Also to make things easy I was thinking of taking ready made cartons but was wondering how to carry them ie if in hand luggage would I have to open them as I heard a story about a woman having to open a carton as since i would have a pile of them I thought I should ask?

What have you done?
x

Hi Choc.
We went on holiday when DD was 7 months to Greece. We were still sterilising (not sure what advice is, can't remember!) and we used cold water sterilisation, which was great.
Basically you buy tablets, but make sure they are the 'new' type ones. I bought a basin whilst I was out there, and used litre bottles of water to measure how much I was putting in the basin (according to the instructions). The bottles take about 15 minutes to sterilise (you have to fully immerse them so make sure you get a basin big enough) - the new type tablets are great as you don't have to rinse the bottles out with boiling water, which is what you used to have to do (I believe). The sterilising water lasts 24 hours so you have to do a new batch every day.
Then I used boiled tap water in the usual way and made up the bottles as normal.

I took cartons too and put them in my hold-luggage. My parents took some cartons for me as hand luggage and they had to leave them at the airport as they weren't allowed to take them on unless they opened them and tasted them - sorta defeated the object! The rules may well have been relaxed by now so it's as well checking.
We took a combination of cartons and powdered formula (which you have to pack rather than put in your hand luggage too) - it meant that DD's evening bottle was always a carton which was great as we used to be out at a taverna or something.
Let me know if yu have any questions x

hi aunty thanks for responding

I have checked with Manchester airport and they say that you will be made to taste anything going through passport control
the way round it i think is to buy milk from boots after I have gone through or put in case before (preferable?)

I will stop sterilsing before we go.I stopped at 6 mths with dd and she was fine.

When ds was still on formula I took a tub with the amount of powder we needed through & a bottle of water. We had to taste it, which was fine, and then had the cartons in the suitcase.

Re sterilising, fine if you're going to stop but if not you can get microwave steriliser bags which do 2 bottles at a time IIRC and they're good for about 20 goes in the microwave.

hope you have a good holiday!

the microwave is in the restaurant so not on option really

I stopped sterilising at 6 months and on the advice of my Health Visitor, gave all milk and drinks from lidded beakers which don't need sterilising. I then didn't have the trauma of trying to get my DD to give up a bottle when she was older.

I took ds 1 to turkey when he was still on formula milk and i took one of the big boxes of powder and packed in in my hold luggage. I used to use bottled water and just make up the bottles as i needed them.
I also took sterilising tablets and just filled up the sink with tap water and cleaned them that way with a bottle brush as well. It was fine.
Will be doing the same for ds2 this year when we go to the Dominican.

OFSTEDoutstanding · 06/03/2008 22:16

We took ds to Majorca when he was 10 months, we didn't sterilise and he was SMA formula which was really good because they sell the sachets that make up 9oz of formula. We used to boil the kettle and then put the water in the bottle and add the sachet when we wanted it. The sachets went in the suitcase but we took one bottle ready made up for the flight that we had to taste on the way through and that was at the height of all the ban on hand luggage so you should be fine.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 06/03/2008 23:51

Yes think I am taking powder and doing same. Will have to hide my anger at having to taste formula on way through. So ridiculous.I mean say it was a tiny baby that needed a sterilsed bottle? If you tasted it then it would not be sterile anymore

I just drip a bit of milk on the back of my hand and then lick it off so the bottle remains sterile.
