Zika free holiday help

Hi!

Looking for a Zika free holiday destination for Feb/early March next year and struggling for inspiration. Looked at Seychelles and Mauritus so far.

We did Maldives this Feb in an overwater villa and nothing we have looked at so far seems to match up. We are TTC and will hopefully be pregnant (or still TTC) by Feb so Maldives is a no go due to Zika.

Aware this is very much a first world issue but this is likely the last big holiday we will have for a while if a baby does come along. Husband also has coeliac disease which can make hotel selection a little tricker. Aiming for £10,000ish if anyone has anywhere they know of!

If it helps OP, my DH and I had our honeymoon in Mexico (Zika country) in June and I fell pregnant in July. My midwife was not concerned at all as I wouldn’t have been pregnant then. Sorry this doesn’t directly answer your question, but we struggled so much to find a Zika free destination that wasn’t Europe.

But initially we did look at the Seychelles, we also looked at Greece - some of the very luxurious resorts would not give much change out of £10k!

Luxury European city break
US city break
US road trip
Canary islands
Japan
Azores
Mauritius
Réunion
Seychelles
Bermuda

Thanks!

We don’t really want a road trip in case I do get pregnant beforehand and don’t feel super so looking for something nice and chill.

Not sure if Greece etc would be a bit cold in Feb?

Anyone been to Mauritus in Feb and it not been too wet? We also looked at Reunion but were told it’s good for 3-4 nights as at best.

Can't help with recommendations, but if it helps there is a list on the government website that gives the risk level for counties affected: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/zika-virus-country-specific-risk#atoz

If you have a particular destination in mind you could look further into the actual stats for that country and make a personal judgement call. Before becoming pregnant with my second we wanted a holiday in Antigua which is listed as having a risk. But when I looked further into it, the last confirmed case was in 2016 and it had been removed from the WHO list of countries with active transmission. For me personally, I felt that the chances of catching Zika were very low and it was a risk I was willing to take, mitigated further by the use of repellent and keeping covered up when possible. But that's a judgement call only you can make.

Zika virus: country specific risk

Countries or areas with current or past Zika transmission have been classified into one of two risk ratings.

We went to Mauritius for our honeymoon for the same reason but it was Nov not Feb. What i would say is look into different parts of the island - i recall being told that it has crazy microclimates where one part can be totally different to another. We had a fabulous time so would highly recommend. Good luck deciding!

We discounted Seychelles as it was significantly more expensive at the time we were looking butnthis was a few years ago so i imagine its all different now! 🥴

Hawaii? Australia? Bermuda?

Newusernames · 10/09/2023 11:46

Thanks all! After a bit of research we are going to go with Hawaii!
