TUI; major airport delays; any compensation?

This was four months ago. I was taking my DDs aged 2 and 1 to Lanzarote, flying from Gatwick. All inclusive 2 weeker.
Flight left Gatwick 5 hours late. First 2 hours not really sure, general delays, but last 3 hours (when we were stuck on plane) were because no planes leaving or landing due to weather. Tbf when planes were allowed we were very quickly off.
Couldn't land in Lanzarote (too windy!), and so flew onto Gran Canaria! Arrived in a hotel there at 3am. Spent most of next day transferring back to Lanzarote.
Got to hotel in Lanzarote c6.30pm, about 22 hours after should have done. Holiday great afterwards. We did get free tea, meals on plane, etc, but nothing else was offered.
Ultimately, none of this was TUI's fault - all due to weather etc. But it was hard as I was in early stages of pregnancy and had sole responsibility for a 1 and 2 year old.
My understanding is there is no compensation as TUI did not do anything wrong themselves, and post Brexit/Covid that's now a requirement. Does anyone know? I'd be quite happy with vouchers btw as I'll be using them again!

Travel insurance?

YouHoooo · 04/09/2023 11:19

Travel insurance for anything you spent out of pocket.

Compensation only being due when the airline is at fault has always been the case btw - for once that is nothing to do with Brexit or Covid

From the CAA website.

Disruptions caused by things like extreme weather, airport or air traffic control employee strikes or other ‘extraordinary circumstances’ are not eligible for compensation.

Delays | Civil Aviation Authority

Your rights when a flight is delayed

That's what I thought. The only expense I had was buying a cheese sandwich at the airport in Gran Canaria. I really can't be bothered claiming compensation for that!

I'm very impressed that you did that trip on your own, pregnant with a 1 and 2 year old 😮. How did you stop them legging it/drowning etc.

Yeah as it was not their fault I think you can only claim out of pocket expenses.

airlines often try and fob you off with “it wasn’t our fault” when actually it was, but in this case it really wasn’t, except possibly the first part of the delay.

that all said when we had not a very significant delay with jet 2 last year, I think less than 2 hours, they sent us a £200 off our next holiday voucher automatically. That was a gesture of goodwill though, not a requirement. So I’m surprised similar has not been offered.
