Flying into Berlin for a few days then hiring a car and exploring, flying back from Munich. Where would you go?

Two adults no kids. Happy to spend time driving but want to spend at least 3 days in each location.

How long do you have between leaving Berlin and getting to Munich?

Ylvamoon · 04/09/2023 08:17

... there is soo much to do and see.
How long/ how many stops... city, countryside, history... ????

ineedanewnametoday · 04/09/2023 08:55

As above, how long do you have in between flights? When are you going?

Havanananana · 04/09/2023 09:41

Just looking at the (almost) direct route from Berlin to Munich, using the A9 autobahn, there are several places you could visit on the way.

The Magdeborg/Halle area (we were in Bernburg recently and were surprised at how beautiful it was - and we had the castle to ourselves).

Leipzig if you like small cities, then further south there's Bayreuth, Nuremberg, Ingolstadt and Munich itself. If you've time, you could also take a trip into Austria to Salzburg.

Spend a couple of days in the Spreewald. Just outside Berlin. Beautiful scenery, villages are connected with canals (if that's even the right word?!) which you can traverse in little boats.

Pre child, DH and I used to visit here every year and I highly recommend it:

There are lots of beautiful hotels around the area, however.

Saxony-Anhalt - Magdeburg, Dessau, Halle, Bernburg, Wittenberg etc. - is full of history from the Middle Ages, as well as the more recent post-WW2 history of East Germany. Because there was so little money available after WW2, many of the towns and cities in the area were not re-developed or modernised (and in some cases, like Bernburg, were left to almost decay) and so have retained their pre-war layout and buildings, which thankfully are now being restored and recognised for the cultural importance that they represent.

There is plenty of nature too, particularly along the Elbe and Saale river valleys.

Further south you could look at the route of the German "Romantic Road" which runs close enough to Munich for you to pick a section on your journey from Berlin. Romantic Road Germany - information, maps and sights

The Invictus games?

@Girlintheframe

Although you say you'll hire a car, this is quite an expensive option, particularly if you are planning on hiring in Berlin and returning the car in Munich. A one-way hire adds substantially to the cost.

An alternative would be to look at the various discounted rail tickets offered by Deutsche Bahn.

The German Rail Pass offers travellers residing outside of Germany unlimited travel across Germany. It costs from €153 - and there is an additional discount for two people travelling together.

The Deutschland-Ticket (D-Ticket for short) lets you travel easily by all means of local public transport from for just €49 per month, which to be honest is a bargain. The only restriction is that you can't use the high-speed Intercity trains, but if you're taking your time exploring towns on your way, this is not a problem. Regional and local trains are still very clean, efficient and reliable, and local buses are also included. [This ticket is a subscription ticket, but the subscription can be cancelled at any time - so after the first month you just cancel].

We have just flown back from Munich after visiting Austria. Munich is 1.5 hours by car from the Austrian alps if you like walking and get good weather definitely recommended cable car trips around St Johann area

tizalinatuna · 05/09/2023 07:14

Look up Saxon Switzerland near Dresden. It is beautiful.

SeatonCarew · 05/09/2023 07:16

It would be well worth dropping south from Berlin and visiting Goerlitz on the Polish border for a couple of days. It's incredibly beautiful and well preserved, thanks to a unique combination of Communist neglect and a benign secret patron who has poured millions into its restoration over many years. Take a tour on the little train for a wonderful insight into its unique history.

Put Goerlitz into Google images and enjoy. 😊
