Prague or Copenhagen

Planning a trip in early/mid-December and narrowed it down to Prague or Copenhagen. This is due to flight availability from our local area (so please don't suggest alternatives!).

I was worried that Prague might be stag do central, but perhaps that isn't the case anymore. On the other hand that Copenhagen is very expensive to eat and drink.

It is just me and DP, we tend to like walking around a lot, looking at architecture, and we do love food and drink :)

Anyone been to either recently and have a preference.

I’m in denmark atm (not Copenhagen). Love it but jeez it’s expensive. So be prepared for that. But otherwise would vote Copenhagen- Prague is v overrated and too many tourists (IMO)

@TizerorFizz yes they are- I mentioned it not specifically for you but for anyone doing it on a tight budget.

Vivaldi do a great toasted smoked salmon sandwich with salad and fries- it's about £22 but massive- we used to share one at lunch sometimes

TizerorFizz · 01/09/2023 17:43

@Crikeyalmighty We like local cafes with good coffee. I’m sure we will be fine and spoilt for choice.

@TizerorFizz I really must recommend 'maudes' to you!! It's in Fredericksberg (lovely leafy area) and is done out like your grandmothers parlour.it's on a corner in a residential neighbourhood about2 minutes from the metro and does lovely cakes and nibbles and really great coffee!!

I have been to both, Copenhagen in July, but I haven’t been to Prague for more than 20 years!

i expect the Tivoli Gardens in Denmark would be lovely in December. I was once there in October, and it was all done up for Halloween.

We went to Prague for Christmas, and it was amazing, and felt very Christmassy. Prague is a smaller city, so more walk-able.

Of the two, I think I would choose Prague for December, but that would depend on what people think about stag dos. It wasn’t stag city, yet, when we went.

If you ever go to Lund you might like Alice & Kattens tesalong!

Been to both and much preferred Copenhagen. A great walking city and the food is incredible. Prague was fine but just felt very grey and a bit bleak 😬

TizerorFizz · 01/09/2023 18:22

@suckrifice Yes. We plan to go to Lund. DD says it’s wonderful and I want to see the church. Thanks for the tip!

Lund is beautiful. So is Malmö which is not far from Lund. Hope you’ll have a good time!

TizerorFizz · 01/09/2023 20:54

@suckrifice DD thought Lund was better and I think it’s nearer to Copenhagen? So suits us.

They are both nice, but if you want to see the church then you will like Lund. No, Lund is further away from Copenhagen but not far. It’s a 20 min drive. The bridge is between Copenhagen and Malmö.

TizerorFizz · 02/09/2023 09:28

@suckrifice I think it’s the train for us. Around 48 minutes. Yes. A bit longer than Malmo.

Just jumping on this thread as I'm possibly taking DS16 and DS12 to Copenhagen the first week in January, taking advantage of cheapish flights and the fact that the kids are still off school. Been reading about Christmas at Tivoli, but it ends on 31st Dec. Will everything be back to normal and de-Christmas-ed in Jan??? I'm hoping that it'll still be beautifully wintery in and around the city. My plan (so far) is to stay at a hotel in Copenhagen, travel across the bridge to see Malmo, and just look around at stuff. I have seen a few hotels in Malmo and could possibly base ourselves there and go across to Copenhagen if it's going to be cheaper... Do I need this Copenhagen card, or can we get around and see enough without it? It seems a little bit expensive, but then again if it makes to get one for me and one for DS16 (and sneak DS12 into the under 11 category) then I'll get one. We mostly like to look at buildings, churches, countryside/foresty places rather than going in galleries and museums. As for food, whenever I go away I buy stuff from supermarkets and make a packed lunch, that does for me. And the kids are really fussy so will live on baguettes and crisps to survive. Maybe McDonalds if they need more to eat. Lots of good tips @Crikeyalmighty thank you. On this subject and many others!

@WinkyTinky Have a look at the wake up hostel if on a budget- my son had a very nice plain but cosy room there with bathroom . I would stay in Copenhagen- the Malmo trains can be a bit fickle and it's still 40 minutes into centre as they often check passports and ID on the train - particularly of non Danes! Bit of a fag - but both countries very hot on 'non legals' (don't wish to sound racist but it is a fact)

Don't bother with the card if you aren't doing galleries/museums- you can use your card on the metro easily or use DOT (an app) - I used DOT all the time.

January is often cloudy and dull with odd days of sun and at times we had snow showers - lots of places kept the lights up still- so felt winters but cosy- we didn't have nearly as much rain as here- maybe we were lucky in those 20 months. We used to do beach walks in January quite often . Dragor is a beautiful fishing village about 6 miles out near the airport

The bridge to Sweden is a good day out - Malmo old centre is lovely - Lund is really lovely. It was a favourite day trip for us, Roskilde is lovely too and only 20 minutes on train - excellent Viking museum - it has an old train (quite big) and a big indoor shopping centre on the edge.

WinkyTinky · 13/12/2023 13:16

Thanks @Crikeyalmighty I'll look at fitting Roskilde in. I really hope we get there.

suckrifice · 13/12/2023 18:58

Copenhagen is shockingly expensive right now though, compared to Sweden.

Crikeyalmighty · 13/12/2023 20:15

@suckrifice indeed- hence why we are off to Stockholm for new year!! Basically prices are roughly the same in kroner but Danish kroner around 8.7 and Swedish kroner 12 - it was the same when we lived in Copenhagen- we would have actually picked to have moved to Stockholm (I like both equally) but it was during covid period and we couldn't actually go to Sweden to look at rental houses due to flying rules - whereas we could fly to Copenhagen . (But couldn't cross into Sweden)
