Norwegian cruise

We're thinking of a summer cruise to the Norwegian fjords next year.

We have two DD aged 10 and 12.

Does anyone have any recommendations in this respect please?

Following! Slightly older kids so am worried it's a route that doesn't appeal to families!

PinkFloors · 29/08/2023 12:11

@hopeishere I'm thinking the same!

We went on one this year and booked again for next year. There were loads of families with kids of all ages on board.

@TooOldForThisNonsense This is good to hear. Do you mind me asking which cruise company you used please?

We did this with P and O. We didn't take children but there were plenty of families and children on board. P and O have a good program of stuff for children and the were plenty of excursions.

@DeltaAlphaDelta79 Thank you.

P&O Iona does two popular 7 day Fjords itineraries during the summer season. Both are very popular with families and Iona is a great ship for families too.

We're just back from a fjord cruise which my husband and I loved. Our 6-year-old, however, was not impressed.

We chose Celebrity (Silhouette) and it turns out that they don't really cater for kids. Bearing in mind we went in the height of school holidays, there were no kids books in the library, the movies were all 13+, the board games all had pieces missing and only 1 or 2 of the daily activities were aimed at kids.

To be fair, there was a kids club but only for 1 hour in the day and 1 at night - we don't use them anyway but on other ships, the kids clubs are available all day.

There was an outdoor pool which some kids were brave enough to use and the indoor pool only permitted children between 5pm and 7pm and was so busy it was impossible to do very much.

In contrast, Royal Caribbean has so many amenities for children, you'd be hard pressed to fault them. So, I'd say definitely do it, but research your cruise line and cruise ship really well beforehand.

We went this year and will go again in a few years when kids are a bit older. Currently young primary/pre schools. We did P and O Iona, fantastic ship and loads to do. Daughter loved kids club and wanted to go all the time, son hated it and wouldn’t go but plenty else for him to do.
we did have terrible weather and missed a port but that can’t be helped!

Thanks all, this is really helpful.

P&O, Princess or Royal Caribbean would be your best cruise lines for kids. Look at the itinerary you want and see which lines fit your calendar and budget. At the ages of your kids I would say Royal Caribbean or P&O would be your best bets. Avoid Cunard, Celebrity or any of the 6 star line cruises with kids. They will be bored.

PinkFloors · 29/08/2023 15:43

@OhhhhhhhhBiscuits Thank you, this ties in with my research so far!

Sure. We were on P and O Iona

Celebrity and RC also do Fjords itinerary but they were much more expensive

TooOldForThisNonsense · 29/08/2023 17:15

And Princess as well I think

PinkFloors · 29/08/2023 17:50

@TooOldForThisNonsense Thank you. I’ve just looked at P&O Iona and that seems to be the winner so far.
