Why is Mykonos in Greece so expensive?

I think I might have made a bit of a booboo! Booked some cheap easyjet flights to Mykonos. Now I look at accommodation, even 2* stuff is £200 a night... and apparently sun loungers are £100 a day (EACH)

It’s crazy expensive there and only getting worse.

How long are you going for? I’d be tempted to get a ferry to Naxos or Paros

It's very trendy I think. I'm in Italy and it's the island of choice for rich teenagers.

Oooh yes - a ferry to Paros. Lovely island. We had a great week in Naoussa.

Debzyrobinson · 27/08/2023 16:25

Did I hear right £100.00
For a sunlounger

What dates?

minipie · 27/08/2023 16:27

You can get ferries from Mykonos to lots of islands which are less expensive

Mykonos is expensive as it has an airport and got developed very early and has a reputation for partying/cool hotels

Get a ferry to Naxos. It should be cheaper there and somewhat more laidback.

getmeavodka · 27/08/2023 16:35

Agree with the idea to go to Naxos. We stayed there in July with really nice accommodation for about 100 euros a night right on the beach. We didn't pay for sunbeds just had to buy a drink from a beach bar .

MargotMoon · 27/08/2023 16:38

Recommend Siros if the ferry goes there

countdowntonap · 27/08/2023 16:54

Where in Mykokos do you intend to stay? If you’re staying in the town, you’ll need your own transport to get to the beach clubs really.
Agrari Beach Club and Liasti Beach Club are not hugely expensive for sunbeds, and Agrari used to do a small bus from the port, leaving at 10am and returning at 6pm.

If you stay in Ornos (I haven’t personally but have driven there) the whole beach is covered in loungers owned by different tavernas. You’re looking at more like €50 for a pair of loungers there, maybe less out of peak season.

DP and I are going to Mykonos for 10 days in 2 weeks’ time. We booked our accommodation ages ago and I think it was around ~£150/night for 2 different places.

We’ve accepted that it’s going to be a very expensive holiday once we’re there and expect to spend the same as a 3 week trip to Thailand and Bali. We don’t really stick to a budget on holiday, we focus on having a good time, so we’re just going to roll with it in Mykonos (these are the child-free years, it won’t always be like this…!).

Tbh OP, I don’t think Mykonos is a last-minute place in terms of getting decent accommodation - can you change the flights at all?

Because these are tourist based islands, and they know they can rip you off. Maybe try islands without hotels, sun loungers covering the beaches, and resorts?
