Done a comparison site quote - so many to choose from and am tempted to go with a big name and pay over the odds - Virginmoney, Admiral etc.

Lots of others coming in at half the price but never heard of them - Puffin, Cover 4 You, Switched on, Holiday Extras

Anyone recommend anyone they have used and made a claim etc.

I’ve had travel insurance from a range of providers, to be honest all have been much of a muchness.

I would recommend going for the cheapest option which has:

  • Medical expense cover of more than £5million
  • Cancellation cover of more than the full cost of the holiday for your son
  • Personal belongings cover of more than the belongings your son plans to take (check if they cover phones / gadgets as part of this or not)
  • Personal liability cover of more than £1million

Check what the policy is for alcohol - some insurers won’t cover anything that happens after even one drink, which I am guessing might be an issue for a lads holiday.

Thanks for this - yes looked at extra for gadgets due to his mobile.

Make sure anh activities they're likely to take part in are covered. Some policies may need an add-on.

Banana boat rides spring to mind.

Look out for what's covered under sports and activities too, some have an extra premium for more risky activities eg jetskiing. We found a policy once where you had to pay extra to cover football injuries, even if it was just a kickabout on the beach, as DS is football mad that was a no from us, most will be fine for that sort of thing but worth checking.

Everyone I've checked mentions not covered for:
Excessive alcohol that could cloud judgment
Activities such as use of scooters, quadbikes, paragliding etc

So he's not doing them Ive told him!

All policies will exclude for excessive alcohol - I would avoid any that state a specific level of alcohol if it is small. Dogtag for example say a blood alcohol of 0.19% which is only about 4 pints for most people.

I recently got the Switched On one for DD.

I’ve used cover 4 you several times. I did have to claim on them once for a doctors visit. I had an excess waiver and didn’t have to pay a penny. Can’t fault them really. But check if the cover would be right for what your ds needs. I also don’t think you’d get the excess waiver the first time you use them.
