If you like rides, Tivoli is great - you could spend a day there if so inclined!

National Museum
Glyptoteket art and sculpture museum
Electric boat
Christainsborg palace

eat smørrebrød! and a hotdog from one of the many stalls.

AnOldCynic · 19/08/2023 20:31

I've heard Kødbyens Fiskebar is great. Hire bikes and go to the beach for a swim!

fiorentina · 19/08/2023 20:33

Hire bikes or walk around
to see lots of areas.
There are some amazing restaurants! The food halls also sell delicious high quality food so worth investigating.
Tivoli Gardens very touristy but not too tacky.
We went in winter and walking around in the cold drinking grog (mulled wine) etc was great fun!

Do the canal boat tour of the city - it's a fast way to see LOADS! Climb the church with the wonky spire (can't recall name). See Christiania. Definitely visit Tivoli and have a Chai Tea (they make the most gorgeous chai ever). If you can find a branch of Søstrene Grene buy all the cheap useful things! I miss CPH!

Canal boat tour
Walk out the round tower - a continuous ramp as a former King used to ride his horse up there
Go an see the royal palaces
Tivoli gardens
Walk up the outside of the church spire of Our Saviours
If time take the train up the coast to the medieval town of Helsingør and look at Kronborg castle the inspiration for Elsinore in Hamlet

Eat
Open sandwiches or an "anrettning" - a platter to make your own sandwiches
One of those ice creams with the whipped cream and marshmallow tea cakes smushed in the top

Wonderful thank you!
Looks like canal tour is a good option. Pretty keen on the sound of that ice cream!

We got a boat over to a great street food place called Reffen, which is recommend. We also went to Bakken in the suburbs instead of Tivoli for rollercoaster action. I'd also recommend hiring a bike, which is easily available. I went a few years ago, but we had a great time!

Bakken is great - do they still do the horse carriage rides around the estate?

Went last weekend and LOVED it. Can recommend eating at Karla's restaurant for traditional danish food. It was amazing. Also, best thing we did was go on a guided bike tour. It's completely flat and so we'll set up for cycling. I'm not a natural cyclist and I absolutely loved it. Saw all the sights, got interesting little stories from a great English speaking guide, and also got taken into Christiania free town. Let me know if you're interested and I'll hook out the name of the computer used. We saw the canal tours but they looked a bit meh to be honest - about 80 people being talked at via a loud speaker in lots of different languages. We were a group of 14 and it was great.

SwattyPie · 19/08/2023 21:55

Also, Tivoli was lovely, but we were there without kids and it felt a bit odd. You can go in and leave again on the same day, and it's worth it. We went back when it was dark to see the lights. It kind of has to be done, but it wasn't the best, by any means.

I’ve always managed to get great value from using a Copenhagen card - covers transport as well as attractions.

DupontsYellowDressingGown · 19/08/2023 21:56

Torvehallerne for food - food market with lots of tasty offerings

Came on to say this, especially smag. Excellent salad bowls.

MinnesotaMuffin · 19/08/2023 22:04

If you like beer and BBQ go to Warpigs brewpub.

asecretslob · 19/08/2023 22:21

@SwattyPie

I would like the details of that cycling tour please 🙏
I am off to Copenhagen in September

SwattyPie · 19/08/2023 22:29

We used "City Bike Adventures" and did the 3 hour tour. They stop off for 10/15 mins at each sight, so it's very chilled but doesn't get boring! It was just under £40 each, but def the best thing we did. We had glorious sunshine though, which probably helped too! Check trip advisor for more details.

Also, DEFINITELY agree with those that recommend Torvallhallen for a mooch around the food stalls and to buy your lunch. It is delicious!

We debated the Copenhagen Card which lots of people recommended, but in the end we didn't use any public transport, we walked everywhere. (Apart from airport into town - the train is about £3 and it's v easy). Depends how much you like walking though. Did 30,000 steps on the day we did the most exploring.

Bæst - pizzas and charcuterie
Mirabelle - breakfast in the morning and pasta after lunch
Manfreds - £40 tasting menu, mainly vegetables, locally grown, natural wines
Relæ - Michelin star tasting menu - around £160
Smk - art gallery with small plates/coffee, wine etc
La banchina - natural wine and small plates, by a dock with a nice view, bit of a travel.
Slurp - ramen restaurant, only 4 options so what they do is really good.
Hija de Sanchez - Mexican restaurant by ex noma chef, heard very good things, also has a shack in the summer but it may be closed now.
Gasoline grill - take out burger place, fresh every day, once it’s gone it’s gone so need to be early, heard amazing things about it.
Grød- specialises in porridge in the morning and risotto of an evening, in just about every book I’ve seen about eating in Copenhagen, the porridge is a MUST!

Fabulous thank you, great recommendations.

Is it easy to hire a bike without a tour?

I'm so hungry looking at the food suggestions!

@atthebottomofthehill sorry for late message on this board but we are looking at going in the winter for my DH birthday; if you have any post trip recs could you share and any advice on places to stay? Thank you!

herewegoroundtheblueberrybush · 03/03/2024 14:51

We stayed at wake up borergarde which was great, modern clean good location. But I was with a friend, it would be small for a family. We enjoyed the aire baths which were pricey but lovely - again with a partner or friend, not kids! Otherwise just wandering was lovely.
