Eating salad in Greece

Off to Rhodes and was wondering how safe it is these days to eat salad in an All Inclusive hotel?

I remember years ago, it was a no-no. Is ir still like that, or have things moved on?

When Brits first started going "abroad" it was regular advice to avoid salads and ice in drinks, even brushing your teeth with tap water and the water did make us ill. It was almost expected on a sunshine holiday that you'd need the imodium at some point. The first time I went to Majorca I was horribly ill.

It hasn't been like that for a long time though.

To all those people who think this is a silly question, if your water doesn't come from the mains but comes from a well, it can still not be safe to drink. We've been to places in rural France where it's advised not to drink the water and it's certainly upset my tummy when I have. I would assume that a hotel would be connected to the mains water so shouldn't be an issue beyond usual buffet food concerns!

For everyone being sarky about "what do the locals eat?". They're used to it. It's sensible to be cautious whenever the water will be "different". The locals drink the water in Dehli, tourists would be pretty stupid to do so.

You'll be fine in Greece now, but that hasn't always been the case and it's a valid question when travelling anywhere.

@TreesandFish its nothing to do with tap water/hotel hygiene. It will be E coli on the lettuce which comes from animal shit in the soil and water used to grow it.

Low risk, but there have been outbreaks in America where several children and elderly have died.

EU standards are higher then American though.

I’m just back from a week in Rhodes at an all inclusive. The amount of salad I ate defies description. The tomatoes are literally the work of the gods! My advice would be to eat it all and enjoy every bite!

And people - do go to Rhodes if you are thinking about it - the press over played the fires and they are paying for it now.

I had the best.holiday.ever! Wish I was still out there eating salad 🥗 😎

Why are people making fun? OP has acknowledged this is something that used to be true, so it’s not some far-fetched idea. People definitely used to be told not to eat salad or washed fruit on holiday.

I agree.

I hate when someone asks a simple question (in this case a very legitimate one) and then gets idiots making silly replies, making them feel like shit for asking.

Fair question. I've always been fine with Greek salad in Greece and hot buffets around the world. I have never drunk tap water, out of habit, and use bottled water to clean teeth. It was advised at the time.
Relative came down with salmonella in Bulgaria, birds flying around restaurant or undercooked chicken. Man was most ill, tested positive. Wife is pescetarian, dodgy tummy but tested negative.
So long as all inclusive buffet is hot, with no obvious animals feasting on it, should be fine.
E Coli on salad leaves is a thing in the US. Uncooked bean sprouts are not recommended in the UK. Interesting documentary on Netflix about it.

I was wondering why this post was at the top of the list the last couple of times i clicked on active... curiosity sated...

I’m not sure why people are scoffing. I always get an upset stomach when I travel abroad and assume it’s the water/ice.

You can get E-coli from salad in this country. I have a family member who was seriously ill from a salad bought in M&S and there was a nationwide E. coli outbreak.

Hoppinggreen · 17/08/2023 09:00

Tap water in most EU countries is as good or better than the water here

Icequeen01 · 17/08/2023 09:02

Ok so not Rhodes but just came back from Crete and ate one of their gorgeous salads everyday. I'm still dreaming about them, particularly a lovely avocado salad which had pomegranate and nuts in it. Devine! You will be fine Op. Enjoy!

Ate a huge Greek salad every day on my recent holiday from a different restaurant/cafe each time. Never got ill. I did get a bit addicted to the olives though - delicious.

Same here!

You will probably be fine but I tend to only eat hot food when I am away from home (in the UK or anywhere else). But then I am particularly cautious.

I love salad but would never have it away from home.
