4 nights in NY in late May. What would your itinerary be?

Hotel booked. Not far from Grand Central station. Arriving teatime on a Sat and travelling home 7pm on the last day.
Have never been before. 2 adult friends on a bucket list trip.

How would you do it?
Would you get the NY pass?
What would you see?
Where would you eat? )Not fussed about fancy dining at all.)
.

We have 4 nights in NY in October and I found this infographic useful. Our must sees are Dumbo / Brooklyn Bridge, WTC memorial and Wall Street area, Central Park and Highline so we've planned a rough itinerary around that. Food wise we're planning diner or bakery breakfast, hot dog or pizza type fast lunch then one night in Chinatown. Other than that we'll play it by ear. Definitely going to Levain Bakery for a cookie though and I'd like a good bagel!

Place marking as also heading to NY in May. OP where have you opted to stay?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/08/2023 17:24

Westgate New York Grand Central. Suited our needs and budget as we also wanted a twin (queen) bed room.

I’d definitely recommend getting the pass, well worth it. Have a look at attractions.com.

Sorry-that should be attractiontickets.com

OP we stayed in that exact hotel! We had a great time.
For breakfast we enjoyed the Townhouse diner - your typical giant American breakfast.
To be honest we just spent a lot of time walking around. You'll be close to the shops on 5th Avenue and also able to walk to Central Park.
We walked to the 9/11 memorial and Wall Street, and I think also walked down some of Broadway on the same day.
The ferry was great, reasonably priced and we went under the Brooklyn Bridge and could also see the Statue of Liberty albeit at a distance.
I guess it depends what you want to do. We were mainly happy to absorb the New York vibe and didn't pay for any attractions. We just wandered around a lot, but still managed to see most of the big ticket items.

Walking the what now? When were you going to mention this???

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 16/08/2023 17:57

The pass - you need to price up what you want to do. For me it wasn't worth it even in the Black Friday sale.

lastseasonstop · 16/08/2023 18:25

Check Groupon for a pass. We saved loads. Each attraction cost us under less than £20 so well worth it.

If it were me again - we went earlier this year, I’d do the following:

On your first evening, keep going as long as you can. May be do the ESB or Summit One as both near your hotel. Then food.

I would then factor in another pedicab tour of Central Park. A visit to Ellis Island/SOL. We did the crown last time but didn’t have time to do Ellis Island. I’d also do the 9/11 memorial. We didn’t as we had kids with us.

Chelsea Market, Natural History Museum, Harbour Lights Cruise.

Really good things we did do that I recommend are the Crown, Rise NY, MSG Tour, TOTR (the edge was our least favourite), St Patrick’s Cathedral (go for a coffee at the coffee stand directly over the road) and a walk of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The New York pass was definitely worth it when priced up. Lets you go the edge (great view) empire state rockerfeller etc. Ellis island is really interesting. Loads on there, eg music bus tours. We hired bikes and cycled round Central Park which we wouldn’t have paid for without the pass but it was a great way to see it all without taking ages. Your if grand central is good. Walking the high line is lovely - get some frozen custard from the place underneath the start of it in the village. And if you like musicals there are often Broadway singers in the piano bar of the Edison hotel ( just off Times Square) Who come to blow off steam!

I haven’t been for many years but the best thing about NY is just walking about. Remember Manhattan is only 2.5 wide and about 13 miles long and I liked the buses way more than the underground.
My favourite tourist trip ever was a boat trip round the island.
