Special trip in a few weeks just DH and I. We have 4.5 days. I've been before but years ago and DH has never been. Hit me with your must dos that are outside the usual tourist attractions. Also any recommendations of places to eat/drink. Thank you!

Just came back from NYC on Saturday. It's a very tiring city walking around everywhere. We found a great breakfast diner on Broadway just up from Ed Sullivan theatre called Applejack diner which had an amazing breakfast menu to choose from and reasonably priced. Also a great pizza restaurant on 7th avenue called Ray's pizza. Drink is very expensive everywhere though.

Blimey! We've been to the US a few times but not for about a decade.

Firefighter museum is interesting. They have a 9/11 memorial section there too which is quite humbling. From what I remember, it's very close to the Ghostbusters fire house!

I’m not long back and it wasn’t 25%.

The Firefighters Museum was great, when we went, me and DH were the only ones in there, and the museum guide had great fun dressing us up in the full fight fighters kit and using the hoses, like two big kids!

Theodore Roosevelts Birthplace is a lovely restored house, worth a visit.

A visit to the gold vaults in Wall Street is interesting, but I'm not sure if it's open at the moment.

Definitely a trip up the Statue of Liberty to the crown, but you need to book this well in advance - not exactly off the tourist trail, but very limited in numbers.

These are great, thanks.

Sadly we're already too late for the crown! I didn't realise this and tried to book it yesterday but already no tickets for when we're there. Annoyed at myself 😩

Highlights of our last trip were the Rubin Museum, Neue Galerie, and a train trip up the Hudson Valley to Cold Spring (don't just see Grand Central, board a train there!)

Reading with interest as I'm going with my partner sept 2nd for 4 days. There's a good FB group called
What to do in New York?
and lots of YouTube vlogs . I'm not booking anything tho and just going where the mood takes us. I'm really excited ☺️

Revolving bar at the Marriott Times Square.

Oldest bar is McSorley's E 7th St.

Just been to NYC. It was very hot, don’t know if it might have cooled down by September. We packed a huge amount in as teen DC had never been before, so wanted to do all the touristy stuff. If it had been just me and DH I would’ve preferred a slower pace - say one thing to see/do in the morning and one in the afternoon, as the walking and subway rides, although fun, were knackering (and I’m a tough Londoner!).

I’d really recommend getting the subway to DUMBO, the area just over in Brooklyn, going to one of the pizza places (Grimaldis, Juliana’s…there are others) and getting the ferry back to Manhattan by night. The views are spectacular.

CheetosCheerios · 16/08/2023 13:52

Just to add - it’s expensive! I hadn’t been for 10 years and couldn’t believe how much everything had gone up - food and taxis being the most shocking.

We got the monorail and then a train into Manhattan from JFK as taxis were $100.

Worth doing some research and having a list of good cheap eats prepared, as if you’re eating out 2-3 times a day you will need it!
