Feeling Sad about No Holiday until 2024

Before I get flamed, this is a holiday forum. Where people post about holidays and their love of them.

In 2023 I went on holiday at Easter and in June. They were quite close together. One amazing trip and one quite crap trip really. Usually we go on holiday at Easter and at the end of August, so something to look forward to.

This summer has been rain rain and rain. I feel so sad and down about not going away in Europe. I now realise that I won't get to see Greece or Italy until 2024 as due to work commitments I can't go on holiday until January.

How do those of you who love the sun manage when faced with a long period without going away?

OP posts:

Can’t you even squeeze in a 2 or 3 night city break somewhere warm? Surely you can’t be working 24/7, 7 days a week?

September can be lovely in places like Barcelona or Rome.

If it’s a budget thing then that’s different.

sleepyscientist · 16/08/2023 10:49

Yup we aren't going away at all this year as our Caribbean trip is booked for feb not October and we have done the kitchen this year. I'm on literal count down but seeing it as we have two in 2024 to look forward to.

mrsbyers · 16/08/2023 10:50

Have a weekend somewhere , we went to Barcelona once at Christmas time and it was lovely weather

paddleboarder12 · 16/08/2023 11:40

Can you really not go for a long weekend until January?
Could you book a short Canaries break for February?

Usernamen · 16/08/2023 11:50

We prioritise holidays over most things, so go away a few times a year. We last went away in early May but decided not to book anything until end of August to “enjoy London in summer”.

We are definitely regretting that decision! We go away next Friday and are counting down the days.

cheezncrackers · 16/08/2023 18:56

Totally understand OP, but January is only 5 months away ...

My antidote to feeling depressed about not going anywhere is to plan my next trip or the one after that if the next one is already planned. So start researching destinations. January isn't a great month for going away in Europe, unfortunately, but city breaks are good in winter. I like Spain for winter sun (go as far south as possible), so Malaga, Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Jerez ... Winter is a good time to hit the sights of cities like Rome, Florence, etc too as the crowds are minimal.

BeeBelle16 · 16/08/2023 19:01

I completely understand,
If I was you I would NEED a long weekend/ few nights away coming up to look forward to. Especially when this weather has been so shocking at home

Oattree · 16/08/2023 19:30

we prioritise holidays; I will find it vert hard not being able to scape the gloomy weather a few times per year

Zipps · 16/08/2023 23:32

We go on holiday every month since we retired early. Before we retired and in between our holidays now we have lots of days out, overnight stays, spa days, mini cruises, weekend city, theatre or beach breaks. It soon passes if you have lots to look forward to.

Thisgooddog · 16/08/2023 23:36

Aww book a long weekend somewhere in October OP. That will break up the long winter months.

WomanAtWork · 17/08/2023 05:11

You’re not being unreasonable, I love holidays too (although we try to minimise flights and stay in local parts of Europe to reduce the CO2 impact)

i think, if you’re missing sunshine, next week might help! looks very pleasant. We may be in for a great September!

Keep an eye on the local forecast and book a trip to the Uk seaside last minute - go somewhere random and different!- we are off for an overnight camp near a beach at 6am today, cannot WAIT as our European holiday was a bit damp this year (but we were travelling around so less important).

and I had a friend who went to Italy for her summer hol and said it rained every day bar one. She was SO upset! It’s been a weird summer

Which forecast are you looking at?

I see a warm-ish few days coming up, followed by rain & 19 degrees till the end of August, on BBC weather, in London.

ThirdAidKit · 18/08/2023 06:39

If by warm few days you mean 23 - 25 and sunny for the next week? That’s what the met office weather app says

WomanAtWork · 18/08/2023 06:40

@Usernamen hoping this attaches but… this one on the BBC. I’m an hour’s drive from London.

WomanAtWork · 18/08/2023 06:46

@ThirdAidKit Accuweather has my local forecast 24 on Sun, 25 on Mon, 26 Tues, 26 Weds. OP wanted sunshine and looks like she would see the sun if she’s sitting in my garden next week!

I feel bad about being optimistic now as i thought that counted as “warm”. I mean, it is warm, isn’t it? I thought 27-30 was “very warm” and above 30 is “hot”. This feels like a whole new thread!

babybird123 · 18/08/2023 06:49

I last went abroad in 2018 so consider yourself lucky.

ThirdAidKit · 18/08/2023 06:50

Yes exactly - warm and sunny? I do not see rain and 19 degrees like another PP said.

bellac11 · 18/08/2023 06:52

Do you mean you havent got any annual leave booked until next year or you're just not going on holiday until next year?

Im not good at taking annual leave without there being an actual holiday attached with it but my next holiday isnt until end of September, Im exhausted so I do sympathise. I live for my holidays, always planning, researching, booking in advance

Yes, but that’s it, a few days! Then back to rain and cooler temperatures.

The post I quoted was talking about nice weather into September - I’ll believe it when I see it 😅

Argh read my post! It’s warm for the next few days and then after that….

I see this for late Aug:

We book little treats if possible. I'm away in the U.K. this weekend for instance. My last proper holiday was April and I'm going again in November

DaphneDeloresMoreheadRidesOn · 18/08/2023 07:20

I haven't been on a proper hotel, be-waited-on-hand-and-foot since 2018. We won't be going next year either. I've had 3 weeks self catering in 4 years.

Im pretty fed up with it.

AlexAndScott · 22/08/2023 14:15

We always try and make sure we have at least 1 or 2 holidays booked at a time, whether that's in the UK or abroad, so that we always have something to look forward to. When we start feeling the blues creep up on us, we start planning another trip to keep our minds busy.
