Connecting flight in Copenhagen

Hi all. We're flying form Heathrow to Copenhagen and then Copenhagen to Bergen in Norway next week (airline changed our previous direct flight, which we had booked, to this a few weeks back). Will we need to go through passport control in Copenhagen? We are only taking hand luggage, assume we will need to go through security again? It's a long time since I've done a connecting flight and can't quite remember what I had to do. The flights are both with the same airline (Scandinavian Airlines) but we only have a 1 hour 10 transfer time which I'm a little anxious about.

If you are only transiting in CPH you won’t need to .

Wrong. Norway is a Schengen country so CPH to Bergen is an internal flight and OP will indeed need to clear immigration prior to boarding.

Thank you both. Had been reading about the Schengen area and saw that the CPH airport website mentioned passport control. Wasn't sure if Brexit made things more difficult in terms of needing passports stamped in and out of countries etc as well? Assume we will get off the plane, go through passport control and then following directions for connecting flights?(and keep fingers crossed for no delays).

CPH has new security systems, no need to empty ipads, take off belts, all the things that hold you up, really fast even at hectic times. Also the Scandinavian departure points are very close to security. I am Swedish living in UK and always use SAS/CPH.

But, don't you just go through passport control on the airbound side?

SeaToSki · 16/08/2023 06:06

We went through CPH a few days ago. Its a fairly compact airport and they were super efficient and all spoke excellent english. Just make sure you know the signs for flight connections so you don’t accidentally go out following everyone else to baggage claim and the exit iyswim. With only hand luggage you should be fine unless you first flight delays. Maybe check for later flights from CPH to BGO so you know where you stand in case of a delay

There are lots of flights from CPH to BGO if I'm not mistaken so worst case SAS will change you and your luggage if applicable onto that. They'll be aware you're connecting as will the crew as they have all this info on their iPad. I would try not to stress if you can't control it, it's their obligation to get you there.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like a well organised airport. Still a little unsure with when we need to go through passport control @SaladandGravyWithSlugs and your experience may be different with a Swedish passport? Will keep a close eye for signs and not just follow others, thanks @SeaToSki.

From the uk ypu will go through passport control on arriving in cph, but you will not need to go through passport control arriving in bgo from cph as both cpuntries are in the schengen area. You will need to use the "other passports" queue as the uk is no longer an eu country.

I think Copenhagen Airport is my favourite. I used to use it a lot for work but changed role now. I realise you don't have loads of time, but if your flight is delayed they have lots of great shops! (I love Danish fashion)

ginforall · 16/08/2023 10:50

Thank you @Mendingfences that's really helpful. Fingers crossed for no delays @Uncooperativefingers but if there was I'd definitely be checking out the shops.

I should have mention. I travel with my Scottish husband and our 2 English kids so they all have uk passports. My one is only the Swedish passport.

Connecting flights in Copenhagen are usually very smooth! The airport (CPH) is well-organized and compact, making it easy to navigate. Security and immigration are efficient, but I’d recommend at least 1.5–2 hours for a connection, just in case of delays. If you have time, the airport has great shops and lounges to explore. Safe travels!

Copenhagen airport has some lovely coffee shops....passport control was very smooth for us.

An EU passport holder can take their non-EU spouse and dependents through the EU line, in case you ever need to save time
