can someone tell activities, beaches, maybe zoo, or other nice place to visit.
I know Scarborough is not far so we can go for a day whilst their. Any recommendations please. Thanks

Beverley is a nice town to visit

Femalefootyfan · 13/08/2023 09:14

Your kids might enjoy the speedboat ride around Scarborough harbour for £7 per person.
Sewerby Hall in d there’s a little train that’ll take you down to the seafront.
There’s a bit more to do in Scarborough and the beach is nice and I think (you’re best to check) that there’s a sea life centre there if it’s a wet day.

Femalefootyfan · 13/08/2023 09:16

Sorry, that should say Sewerby Hall in Bridlington is a nice place to spend a half day.

ClashCityRocker · 13/08/2023 09:23

Bridlington is well set out for kids in my experience and weather permitting the beach is great - less crowded than Scarborough South bay (I prefer North bay beach in scarbs as it tends to be quieter but is a bit of a stroll from the main front)

There's a couple of large soft plays on the front at Bridlington, one is an inflatable one within an arcade, and a really decent crazy golf course. There are two smallish zoos - one at sewerby hall which is a nice walk along the front.

The leisure centre in brid is also very good and on the front - decent splash zone and slides etc but you do need to book. Think there's also a clip and climb there.

The fair on the front at brid is also better than scarbs imo.

Brid, like many seaside towns is a bit rough and ready in places but is also good fun for kids.

SparkleHard · 13/08/2023 09:23

There are boat trips from Bridlington as well. There are so many seals in the area, which may appeal to your kids (or not!). Also a chance of seeing dolphins.

I’m not a beach person, but Bridlington beach looks as appealing as Scarborough to my untrained eye. Filey Beach, just down the road looked the best - massive and sandy (but bear in mind this is purely based on looks!)

ClashCityRocker · 13/08/2023 09:23

Oh there's a circus on at the minute too which is decent enough.

Honeybu · 13/08/2023 09:23

Thanks @Femalefootyfan would you recommend staying in Scarborough than Bridlington for kids activities?

I would book Scarborough rather than Bridlington. Bridlington is pretty grotty in my opinion ( I'm a local.) Having said that, my kids would love to stay there and spend a fortune on the amusements/ rides on the sea front. There's a cinema in Brid, plus the leisure centre is good. There's a great swimming pool for kids with slides/ splash zone etc for about £3 entry each. Also a Clip and Climb at the leisure centre too. As a PP said, the little land train to Sewerby Park is fun.

Scarborough has all the above plus loads more. And is just generally nicer! Peasholm Park, North Bay steam railway, Alpamare water park, Playdale Farm a couple of miles away.

fml666 · 13/08/2023 09:29

Filey beach is definitely the best beach around, but not so much to do there for kids, although there are amusements, a couple of rides, and a lovely paddling pool for when the tide's in.

Femalefootyfan · 13/08/2023 09:48

I would probably book Scarborough instead of Bridlington. We’ve not stayed in either place, we’re near enough to go to each place for a day or half day but I think there’s a bit more to do for kids in Scarborough. They’re not too far apart to be honest, it depends if you want to go from one to the other.

dikwad · 13/08/2023 10:01

We had a caravan in Brid for many years and left due to the decline. South Side beach is lovely but, and I might be wrong, I think it's advised not to go on it at the minute due to pollution. Personally, I'd pick Scarborough over Brid but I'm not overly keen on the here either!

BaldButNotOut · 13/08/2023 10:08

Brid is okay but you can easily spend a lot of money on not very nice things if you're there for a week. Scarborough is better for that kind of stretch imo. Much more to do. If you're going to be in the area do spend a day in Filey. Again I wouldn't go there for a week but the beach itself is glorious. Feels like it goes on forever.

whoami24601 · 13/08/2023 10:29

If you're driving can I recommend Falling Foss? A beautiful outdoor cafe with a play area and a stream to paddle in. Nice walks in the woods and the best bacon sandwich for miles.

Honeybu · 13/08/2023 11:04

Thanks everyone I will book Scarborough.

just out of interest would you go Scarborough rather than Blackpool?

I feel Blackpool is a bit run down

LucifersPain · 13/08/2023 11:15

A lot more druggies in Blackpool

BaldButNotOut · 13/08/2023 11:15

Blackpool is fun! It is tacky and a bit rough and ready but it is what it is. Scarborough is "nicer" in that it's not so full on and less garish but tbh it has rundown elements same as lots of UK seaside resorts. Made up for in a long way by the views, which Blackpool doesn't have. There is one in particular that you see as you walk down the main street from the station to the beach. You encounter it at various points if you squeeze between the shops into the little ginnels and it is just beautiful. Almost worth going there for that alone!

If you have a choice, I would say go to Scarborough. When we went last year, there was a really nice tapas restaurant, but apart from that, its a bit rough. I live about 45 minutes from Great Yarmouth. People say Bridlington is the same, but I would say Yarmouth is a bit nicer!

SerafinasGoose · 13/08/2023 12:03

Scarborough so much prettier an area than Blackpool. I grew up locally to the East Yorkshire coast. My favourite 'happy place' is Flamborough Headland, a beautiful chalk peninsula marking the beginning of the Yorkshire Wolds region. It has a seal colony not far from the lighthouse, the famous bird reserve of Bempton Cliffs (only gannets will likely be remaining by now, though) and wonderful rock pools and caves in the cliff to explore when the tide is out.

Filey Beach is simply beautiful: golden, 5 miles long, and about a quarter of a mile wide. There's a huge car park at Filey Brigg. The Brigg in itself is a jutting-out peninsula made of sandstone and looks different colours in different lights. You can take a walk to the end of it and see the contrast between the roiling North Sea leading up to Scarborough and the calm waters of Filey Bay on the other side.

NB. If you're enjoying that coast make sure you keep a sharp eye on the tide times. The sea can sweep back in very suddenly and cut you off if you're not aware. Same applies with rip currents: there are lifeguards on the beaches with flags and warnings to help.

My kid loves a visit to Scarborough Castle, and Peasholm Park has an odd battleship activity I think. It's lovely and worth a visit in its own right. Also if you're heading further afield the North Yorkshire Moors Railway takes in some of the most amazing scenery in the UK. It travels from Pickering, around 15 miles to the west of Scarborough, and goes all the way up to Whitby. If you love Whitby it's worth considering this as a visit to the town as you'll avoid the scrum of parking in high season.

Enjoy beautiful Yorkshire!

SerafinasGoose · 13/08/2023 12:05

Also: the Flamborough Belle boat goes from Bridlington harbour and takes in all those sights up from Bridlington Bay via Flamborough Head to Filey Bay from the sea. Well worth a trip.

NillyNoMates · 13/08/2023 12:10

Scarborough is extremely busy and there’s not a lot there to warrant paying more than to be in Bridlington.

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 13/08/2023 12:18

Bridlington is better than Scarborough
Flamborough is lovely lots of little bays coastal walks. RSPB reserve. Sewerby has the hall and gardens with animals for children and the land train to town. There’s also a model village.
Best swimming pool for miles in the town
The old town, priory and bayle gate museum are lovely.
The high street is a bit bare but so are all the others.
Both beaches are fine better than Scarborough
Just a bit further north is Filey, not a lot there but a nice beach and you can walk down the brigg if you get the tides right. South of Bridlington out of the town are miles of beaches.
I think John Bull rock still do roll your own rock
Burton Agnes hall and gardens is nearby
Lots of walks in nearby countryside that Hockney sketched when he lived in Bridlington

LadyHag · 13/08/2023 12:32

Playdale Barn between Filey and Scarborough is a good day out for kids, on way home if travelling inland towards M62 check out Williams Den (just out of Beverley)

Whitby is a nice day out if you like old towns, very popular for crabbing, don't bother paying to go visit the ruins, just walk up the famous church steps and look round the church and graveyard at the top of the steps!
