Holiday cottage just cancelled last minute

Anyone got any experience?
We booked via VRBO and the host has pulled out literally last minute - they're going to see if they have anything else available. We leave tomorrow!
The only two properties still available for the week that I can find on VRBO in a reasonable drive from where we were meant to be is double and triple to price because they're much larger.
VRBO said they'd not charge us extra --- awaiting a call / email from their team who
Deals with rebooking in such circumstances ... any thoughts/ experience if a similar thing?
TIA

Unfortunately, sometimes cancellations are unavoidable. I manage a holiday let and if there was a show-stopping problem such as a flood, fire, damage etc, I wouldn’t dream of letting the next guests come in.

If it was something like a broken oven or dishwasher I’d offer them the opportunity to cancel or offer a discount if they wanted to go ahead. Either way, it’s about how you deal with it following the cancellation rather than the cancellation itself.

I would understand if it had been that but there was a group of us that had booked 3 properties and they cancelled them all. All booked before the pandemic and the bottom line was they got more money from new bookings and left 20 people trying to find something with 6 days notice.

That’s a slightly different scenario. I’d have been annoyed by that too. The period following lockdowns was rife for this unfortunately. My husband and I had a booking for a self catering place where the owner tried to cancel us rather than allow postponement. Fortunately, we argued with her and she allowed the booking to go ahead at the same price but with very bad grace. I suspect if we hadn’t argued, she’d have cancelled us and rebooked at a higher price.

I meant more that people can’t just say ‘no owner cancellations should be allowed ever’ because there are sometimes circumstances where it’s unavoidable.
