Airbnb - damage we caused

My son scratched the glass top stove in our rental. One ring of 4.
I told the host, including a photo.
I've just received a request for £550 to replace the whole top.
Says that's the only fix they can do.
I had 22 hrs to pay.

I've declined it, asking for more time.

We are away in Canada (from the Uk) and not back for another week.

I want to look into our options more; should I ask for quotes, look into how much a repair should be etc. I cannot so this when I only have my phone in a different country.

I've used Airbnb a lot, never had a situation like this.

I've cried about it this morning; I want to put it out of my mind so we can enjoy our last week.

I am accepting responsibility, and am not disputing I need to pay for repair, but this seems ALOT and I don't want to just pay it.

Any advice?

The scratch was caused by my adult son being over zealous with his cooking, not being reckless - just not experienced with these stove tops.

It’s about 2cm deep?

NO!! In area.

OP posts:
Poorlilthing · 13/08/2023 09:42

So it’s 2cm long and 2cm wide?

StillWantingADog · 13/08/2023 09:43

So it looks like you have to decline to then get the host’s insurer to pay out.

hopefully straightforward then.

I have broken small things before in airbnbs and always offered to pay to replace (generally been told not to bother) but I would def not pay in this scenario.

So it’s 2cm long and 2cm wide?

About that, yes. Am I not explaining well?
I have not said anywhere that it is a single line.
I said "my son scratched the hob"

It is quite a scratch. I have never said otherwise. It's very clear on one of the rings, and is about 2 x 2 cm.
Not at all deep.

I don't want to post the actual photo while the issue is underway. I just don't feel comfortable posting a photo of someone else's properly.

For goodness sake it's a holiday rental, there must already be photos online.

ploverq · 13/08/2023 09:52

It really doesn't matter how big the scratch is, what it looks like or if the OP posts a photo or not. It makes no difference as it clearly shows from the links posted that the OP can decline to pay and AirBnB will cover it. I don't understand why there is so much drama and people demanding photos, it was an accident, the OP didn't take a hammer to the stove and then refuse to pay 🙈

Poorlilthing · 13/08/2023 09:53

So it’s 2cm long and 2cm wide?

a scratch?

a 2cm wide “scratch”?

Why does the size matter?

Bizarre that you would even notify the host of a cosmetic scratch. Deny deny deny.

It's better to be honest.

KissyMissy · 13/08/2023 10:28

Bet the host wouldn't have noticed

They cannot expect everything in their rental to remain pristine.

Except that the next guest will expect everything to be pristine.

If you are renting via Air BnB and cannot handle a cosmetic scratch on a hob then you need to have a long think about your entitlement. The OP has made it clear that it’s cosmetic NOT affecting functionality.

What knife was he using that the blade is 2cm wide?!

Yes. Maybe better described as a scuff mark and quite common on glass hobs.

Poorlilthing · 13/08/2023 10:46

knives don’t “scuff”

they scratch

but they don’t leave 2cm wide scratches (unless he was using a 2cm thick bladed machete)

OP says it was caused by moving a pan on the top, no one apart from you has mentioned a knife 🙄

"It absolutely was not done on purpose, my son is used to gas hobs where you can jiggle pans about."

From the OP

User13986509 · 13/08/2023 11:07

DH scratched ours, its a long thin scratch about 2 inches long, he jiggled the pan about because we used to have gas and you don't have to worry with that, then did the same on our new electric cooker and scratched it.

What kind of sad act would care about a scratch on a ceramic hob in their holiday rental?

panko · 13/08/2023 11:16

Autumnsoon · 12/08/2023 16:40

I would not of reported that
it’s normal wear and tear
how Can u be sure it wasn’t there before u arrived

No its not

People who know that their next guests will leave a negative review complaining about the "ugly damaged hob"

What kind of sad act 'jiggles' a pan about on a ceramic hob enough to cause a 2cm x 2cm scrape (a scratch being a fairly minor linear thing)?

I suspect the real reason the OP isn't posting a pic is that it would change the direction of this thread ad everyone would be going 'FFS - how did he manage to do THAT?'

DinnaeFashYersel · 13/08/2023 11:31

They should have insurance.

I'd offer to pay the excess and not a penny more.

And ask for proof of what the excess is.

My son who is an adult, but not used to cooking on glass too hobs.
He's not a sad act.

I said "my son scratched the hob". That is entirety correct.

I am confident it wouldn't but you are entitled to suspect what you wish.

I also have quite a few hosts on this thread who have reassured me. I don't need to post a pic.
