Two older teenage children plus dh and I. How much would you expect to pay for a fortnight self catering?
We've just come back from Europe and it cost us £4000 for two weeks. How does that compare to others?

our total spend for a week for Greece this year will probably be around £3.5k. £1800 for flights and b&b accommodation, £1500 spending and £200 car hire. That’s 3 adults and 1 teen.

Sallyingon · 13/08/2023 05:22

2 weeks in Greece for 4 people. £1000 flights, £1500 one week b+b, £2000 one week villa. Car hire £500. Spending astronomical. Budgeted £2k but it's going to be neater 3.

How long is a piece of string?

If you picked the cheapest possible self catering package you could find and cooked all your own meals it's going to be an order of magnitude lower than business class flights to a naice villa in a premium location with lots of eating out and cocktails.

Greycatclub · 13/08/2023 06:35

Not so long ago a survey showed the average was around £7k

elenabenjamin · 13/08/2023 07:26

We just got back from Italy (Sardinia) and it was c.£7K for just under 2 wks !!! That was not the plan or what we budgeted but things coated a lot more than we realised when we got there, even basic food options! We usually get away with c.£5K for 4 of us in a self catering with car hire and supplementary eating out, but I think Europe and the entire world (!!) right now is so expensive!
You did well to get it for £4K! Where did you go??

Thanks. That's what I was wondering - I knew we did well but had no idea how much to truly expect. We hired an apartment from a friend so paid minimal costs but then ate out a lot and did a lot of big activities.

OK reading this, I'm suddenly not feeling so bad about paying £6000 for me and 2 young adults to go to the Caribbean for 14 nights, plus apartment hotel and car hire. School holidays are such a bummer!
The (bad) news is that the UK are about to hit a 2 week heatwave just as we fly out....😁

We are away for the next fortnight too but remember sunny uk isn’t the same as holidays! You’d still be working, sweating doing your weekly shop and house jobs. Holiday is 👌🏼 different world! ☀️

You're totally right! I have someone over there sourcing me a hammock as we speak! Enjoy your break too 😄

Depends, eg transport (air or driving) location (northern france or Belgium very different fuel costs to Italy or Spain if driving) facilities you want, if you all share one room or have 2 bedrooms...

We just paid £1300 ai for a week for 2 but we don't go for a while (kids thankfully take themselves these days!) I doubt you can find anywhere for £2600 in summer ai but you could self cater in Brittany

I think that sounds a good deal!

We DIY and don’t do package holidays. But it’s horses for courses really and I understand why people do them because of the ease. A bit blown away by what people are spending on holidays though. We’ve had a week on the French Riviera this July (before the schools broke up). For the three of us (15 year old DD), flights to Nice were £200 all in and our AirBnB in Menton was £700. Spending money was £100 a day (mix of self catering and eating out). We took trains (v cheap) to Cannes, Nice, Monaco & Italy and swam in the sea. Last year we did a multi destination (Vancouver/Calgary/Toronto) trip to Canada for 11 days which cost £2600 for flights and accommodation (flight prices were end of pandemic very low, we stayed in a mixture of AirBnBs and hotels) and spending money of £1.2K. We wouldn’t have been able to do this trip this year on that budget. In 2019 we spent £2300 on 10 days in Sri Lanka and £1700 on 5 days in New York (neither includes spending money). While flight prices have rocketed and we couldn’t do either now on those budgets, I just don’t think I’d consider spending £4K on 2 weeks in Europe. But that’s just me!

NCTDN · 14/08/2023 08:52

To be fair @Whohashiddenthebiscuits, based on your holiday this year I think ours is about the same budget when you account for one more person. Yours looks to be about £500pp for one week which would make 2k for 4 for 2 weeks.
Love the sound of the other holiday!

The AirBnB slept 4 so that price wouldn’t have have increased but if your £4K is a total price including spending money, I take your point @NCTDN . From what friends spend, I don’t think the £4K on a package is in anyway not the norm (and in fact, pretty damn reasonable). I’m just a cheap skate though and spend way too much time working out how to holiday cheaper!

Whohashiddenthebiscuits · 14/08/2023 09:31

Sorry @NCTDN, curse of not reading through a thread before commenting. You didn’t do a package but an apartment

Lancasterel · 14/08/2023 09:41

Similar to you, around £4k driving to France for 2 weeks - I think the travel inc. diesel/tolls and accommodation came to £2500 roughly, and then around £1500 max for spending and food money, probably less actually so maybe more like £3500?

Exactly. We're going simply in Greece and it's under £900 for two excluding spending money but including taxi to the airport and back...
