Travel insurance

Would love your wisdom and recent mumsnetters as I’m feeling frazzled by hols insurance….

We’re a family of four (2 adults 2 small children) looking to buy an annual policy. Between us, we have quite a few diagnosed and well managed health issues (think anxiety, respiratory infections etc). Nothing like cancer, COPD, diabetes etc. My son 3 is also waiting to see paeds for a wheeze / cough he develops at night when he has cold. Due to this, because he hasn’t got a diagnosis, I can’t get online quotes and I’m having to call around - with each call taking 45mins to an hour. The latest quote was £250 which just seems ridiculous! I’ve tried using which and trust pilot to find good companies but they all focus on different things.

I want a policy with good coverage, a good phone line and who actually process claims. Have you used anyone like this? Trying to get a list of three to focus on today. TIA

Who do you bank with? Several banks offer travel insurance with a paid for account. I have found Barclays (Aviva) very easy to deal with and they pay up. It is important to divulge all pre-existing conditions as failure to do so will mean the insurance will not pay up. When you claim they access your GP records. Good travel insurance can be expensive but is worth its weight in gold.I don’t know where you are planning to travel but medical bills add up when you have to pay for every x-ray and every dose of medication.

Surely infections are a one off? You shouldn’t keep getting them. I would agree that changing your Bank account is probably cheaper. Some of your issues sound one offs.

They are one offs but related to the referral to paeds. And they have resulted in antibiotics and once a hospital stay so all has to be declared.

I don’t have a paid for bank account unfortunately. We’re travelling to Europe.

That’s why the premium is high though. Your family is a higher risk category. It’s just bad luck. If nothing wrong you might get it cheaper.

Rip Off Britain did something on insurance this week. Basically we are all supposed to inform them of every single trip to the GP. It is all a game. Everything is a pre existing condition, even if a one off, such as gastrointestitis.

I'm stuck in every circle of hell trying to sort out a cancellation claim right now .

Insurance is a problem for people under investigation for anything, even something that come up clear needs declaring.

It might be worth watching the programme on iplayer.

Piggywaspushed · 10/08/2023 11:32

Do you need to do this now ? When are you travelling?

Bumply · 10/08/2023 11:34

I've used AllClear in the past and this year LV= as they could beat the renewal quote.

Both let you get quotes online with option to add pre-existing conditions on one or more of the people covered.

SgtBilko · 10/08/2023 11:37

Is that £250 for all of you? I don’t think that is bad for a family with health conditions, frankly, but have you tried StaySure?

Okaaaay · 10/08/2023 13:15

Thanks all! Will try to respond. Yes I need to do it now - our first trip is in two weeks and currently uninsured. Stay sure is who the quote was with for us all.

Agree that it’s a horrible game - which is why this is so stressful. Three of us have health issues - it makes it hours and hours worth of a job to sort things out. Thanks for your recommendations - will go through them. The quote I’ve had is from Stay Sure - are they good?

Even at £250 for a year, it’s not that bad for people with health conditions. Going to a doctor and getting meds once will be half that. Although you will have an excess no doubt. Unfortunately Brexit cost us a lot.

Okaaaay · 10/08/2023 15:30

This process is a nightmare. Because my DS (3) is under investigation (for some night time breathing disturbance) no one will insure him at all 😢. Looks like I will have to insure the rest of the family and use the GHIC process if he needs care. It’s totally gutting - and this is for a child who is well 90% of the time but has bad wheezing / coughing when he’s had a virus.

I’ve got a million things wrong with me and have used Staysure. I thought their quote was reasonable. I’ve just remembered it would have been around £250 for me alone for an annual policy but I decided to do the one trip. If I was travelling again, I would have taken the annual policy.
