Planning Summer 2024 Holidays Already?

Am I crazy for starting to plan out my Summer 2024 trip? I had a pretty 'meh' holiday this year for a variety of reasons. I am just itching to get back to Greece. I know what flights I want (on points) and I know what villas I want to rent. Is anyone else like me?!

I have just come into some money and want to book a splurge holiday for next Aug but struggling to know where to start as it seems airlines aren't taking bookings that far ahead? How do I start looking and fantasising, where are you all booking?

I'm interested in Thailand, Greece and anything else sunny with a pool that isn't a soggy tent.

@WesterChick you can book packages more than a year in advance - sometimes way more than a year in advance. So if you want a package to Greece or Thailand you can start checking now. As an example, a quick look at the Tui website shows that they're currently selling holidays up to April 2025.

If you want scheduled flights, well that's a bit more tricky as each airline releases its flights a set number of days before departure, but they're all slightly different. For instance, BA releases flights 355 days before departure, so you have to wait until 355 days before your return date to book. Virgin and Thai Airways release flights 11 months before departure, Easyjet releases flights 9-12 months in advance, but the date of release for specific dates varies; however, if you sign up to their alerts they'll let you know when the next batch is available and up to which date.

As for the best time to book, this varies hugely, but Forbes magazine says for international flights the best time to book for price is between 37 and 87 days in advance. For summer travel it's often a good idea to wait until the January sales - BA and Virgin, for instance, usually have really good prices that they release around new year. HTH. Can you tell I'm an amateur travel agent? Grin

@XelaM the info on the Paris Olympics website on the timing of resale tickets being made available is currently a very vague 'Spring 2024' and they've said all along that the only way to resell tickets is via their portal, so unless you manage to get some kind of package, I doubt there's another way to get them.

As to whether you should book travel/accommodation in advance and on the off-chance you get tickets, I guess the answer is 'Only if you're prepared to either lose the money or travel anyway'. I see the show jumping will be in Versailles, so at least you won't have to travel into central Paris. I'd probably aim to drive and book an Airbnb with a good cancellation policy.

We are almost at the end of our holiday (French gite in Charante Maritime) and I'm already researching next summer for DH and me. First one without the DDs.
We'd like somewhere like Crete in a hotel near to a fishing village/town so we can eat out every night.

Thank you! That's what I've read as well 😕 I will keep an eye out on the official website and see if any reputable companies offer VIP-type packages (for thousands and thousands of £ no doubt 😭😭😭)

I always book holidays the year before. All of my holidays for 2024 are booked/deposits are down.

EllaPaella · 12/08/2023 09:54

I've already booked Portugal for next summer holidays. We've never been abroad in August before as I'm not a fan of very hot weather so feel slightly nervous about it but the kids are over the moon.

MissAmbrosia · 12/08/2023 20:50

I am planning Puglia for next May, after our flights got cancelled last year. Good reminder to see if I can already book for 2024. Or we might do it on the train with stops offs...

SuperiorM · 12/08/2023 20:53

DC has A Levels next year so we have booked UK surf hols for July

Mixituposis · 13/08/2023 06:04

Not sure if uni DC will come next year….it’s other DCs A level year so although I’ve booked the time off work I think we are going to have to leave booking holiday til relatively last minute. Which I’m not hugely happy about (as pp says it’s lovely to have something specific to look forward to ) - risking less availability and higher prices but as it will be just outside school hols will hopefully be ok.

Usernamen · 03/09/2023 20:21

Nothing booked yet for next summer, but we definitely want to do:

Amalfi Coast (main summer hol, probably 10 days)
Lisbon & Comporta
Northumberland

JustMarriedBecca · 03/09/2023 20:27

Booked and paid for Easter, May and July 2024 already.
Know what we're doing August and October 2024.

Also know what we're doing Easter, May, Summer and October 2025.

Too much time, not enough holidays

Tiddlywinkly · 09/08/2023 21:31

Yes! I love booking holidays well in advance as I enjoy planning and research. It's also something to look forward to.

We've booked a one week fjord cruise in Norway for August. It's been on the bucket list a while.

Ooh! I was looking at booking this. Is it with P & O cruises?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 03/09/2023 20:37

We normally book our main summer holiday in the autumn but we had a lunch last weekend to discuss a group trip next August/September.

Having said that, between us, DH and I have six foreign holidays/trips booked before then (this is not normal for us I hasten to add, although we do have a lovely rule of not coming home without having something already booked).

Meredusoleil · 03/09/2023 20:42

How is everyone booking so far ahead? All of the campsite style accommodation I have been looking at are showing no availability for summer 2024, as they are not open for booking yet 😳

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/09/2023 23:06

I tend to book a year or so in advance for the following reasons-

  1. Get the best prices
  2. The most choice
  3. To pay it off monthly if available so it doesn’t feel like such an expense
  4. Have something to look forward to and plan

It works for me anyway!

PizzaPastaWine · 04/09/2023 10:33

I'm still awaiting the Easyjet flights for August 2024.

Greece, preferably Crete for 2 weeks of swimming, kayaking and giros.

mommyduties · 07/09/2023 09:45

You're not crazy for starting to plan your Summer 2024 trip early! I read many have already booked for next year. Good for you! 😀I'm planning to go to South Korea next year and would like to explore Busan. I'm starting to create my itinerary, listing the attractions I would visit, and searching for any tips on traveling to the city. Found this useful article https://www.roadaffair.com/visiting-busan-guide/ and might connect to a local guide as well https://gowithguide.com/korea/busan

I don't know if this is how you prepare for a trip, but yeah, this is how I do it. I'll create a long list of resources and compare them.

TheFairyCaravan · 07/09/2023 13:18

We go on this year’s holiday on Saturday but we booked next year’s in June. We’re going to Kos next September because I found a really nice hotel with a free upgrade to a swim up room in an adults only area. When I told DH that I’d seen it he said “book it! Book it now before it sells out!”

reluctantbrit · 08/09/2023 17:30

We are starting to think about it. We had a busy time with DD starting 6th form but as we now know the term dates and I already arranged the absence with work so we will look soon.

So far it's a Easter trip to France and 2 weeks in Germany for Summer but nothing concrete.

Sallyingon · 08/09/2023 23:07

I've booked ours. 5 nights in May in Italy in an Airbnb in the cinque terre. V cheap flights and accommodation. Then a week's all.inclusive in Croatia in August, v expensive. Going to pay monthly

Bbq1 · 08/09/2023 23:13

We've Just booked 2 weeks in LA for next summer after returning home from there 3 weeks, ago!

PumpkinPie2016 · 11/09/2023 21:11

I have booked for August 2024 to Austria (and Feb 2024 but that's a UK one).

We went this year and had a brilliant time. There were things we didn't get chance to do so wanted to go back and I wanted the same hotel as it was amazing.

Gives us chance to save up!

Whereabouts in Austria @PumpkinPie2016?

TravellingSpoon · 11/09/2023 22:03

Ive booked my holidays for next year already. I always do it as soon as possible because I think you get more choice, the best price and more time to pay it off.

Have booked Madiera (May) and Mallorca (October) for next year, and am looking at Rhodes for the summer but need to finalise dates.

PumpkinPie2016 · 12/09/2023 05:53

@EmmaPaella Zell am See 🙂

It's a lovely place - the town itself is lovely and then you have the mountains around.
