Iceland this summer

Would love to get a last minute break to Iceland this month. Any tips? Should we just book a flight and hotel in Reykjavik then hire a car as we don't mind driving.

Would consider Air bnb but don't know the areas well enough to begin looking.

2 adults and one 14 year old. Would go next week if we can find a deal.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Are you thinking of doing the ring road?

Iceland can be very busy during the summer and you might struggle to get accomodation this close to going, although it depends on budget of course.

Tui and EasyJet both do Iceland packages and might have some late deals / availability

No idea what the ring road is.

3 nights. Just some of the usual tourists landmarks and things to do

Should we stay in Reykjavik or airbnb? And which hotel would you recommend?

Ah if you’re just wanting to stay in Reykjavik you’ll be able to find accomodation fine probably. We didn’t hire a car for when we were in the city, just walked and used buses. The Radisson Blu hotel is well located and was very comfortable.

You will need a car.
Food well its not for everyone and can be very expensive I seem to remember Coffee and soup being £40!
We stayed in a self catering apartment and lived on Pizza and stuff from the supermarket for the long weekend, The £1 Pizzas from Iceland ( yes the same as the Iceland supermarket here where £5 and that was a few years ago
Plan your days its vital as its a massive place

If you are just there for three nights/2 full days then I wouldn’t suggest hiring a car. Just get the bus from the airport to Reykjavik. One full day seeing the city then get an organised day trip to do the Golden Circle, that’s the usual touristy thing to do.
Id recommend getting either hotel or apartment centrally so you can walk to most of the city sights that you’ll need to.
Lots of fun museums, you’ll struggle to fit what you want to do in such a short time scale.
Just check the weather forecast before you go. Even in the city it can be very wet, very cold or nice and warm, in August.
it is expensive to eat out but there’s lots of cafes and also all the small supermarkets such as Bonus have a selection of ready-made sandwiches, rolls etc.
Theres quite a few central hotels, also self catering apartments, such as Svala apartments., very central.
If you can, I’d definitely recommend seeing if you stretch to a longer trip. The best of the scenery is several hours drive away. The ring road particularly in the east and as you head more north, is stunning.
Or closer to Reykjavik is the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
For a longer trip, there’s lots of organised tours or driving in a hire car is very easy. Iceland is a very organised country, lots of car parks, toilets, walkways to the scenic sites etc.
