Anyone know about health care in Austria? (Eczema)

We're on holiday in Austria for another 9 days. Dd2 has come out in eczema over her legs..At least I think it's eczema. Maybe ringworm. We had brought moisturizer with us, but for various reasons, has not managed to get hold of steroid cream before coming on hols. We would definitely be doing steroid creaming now if we had it. Her moisturizer has now run out. Can we get steroids or eczema cream from a pharmacy? If so, any idea what it's called over here? I don't speak any German.

Rash is Ausschlag . Tbh it would be worth just showing it to a pharmacist with the cream you have. It looks like a reaction to me more then eczema. Most will speak English.

Did your daughter walk through meadows with high grass? There are several plants that can cause this kind of rash. I used to spend lots of holidays in Austria as a child and a pharmacist would definitely recognise this and be able to help.

Thanks. We have been out walking so reaction to something is a possibility. It's also much higher up her leg as well, with egg sized patch of solid inflammation close to top of her legs. We are well stocked for piriton and antihistamine cream as she is allergic to peanuts and has had weird reactions to things over the years.

Yes go to the pharmacy ‘apokteke’. They will have someone there who can take a look at rash and hopefully prescribe something.
Otherwise the local Haus arzt ‘doctor’ in the town where you are staying should be able to see you straight away. It’s only around €45 for general appointment and you can reclaim on travel insurance, if it’s worth it

You can just walk in to any pharmacy (Apotheke) or doctor's surgery. Ask at your accommodation or at the Tourist Office for the nearest ones. Almost everyone at the pharmacy or surgery will speak English.

You generally pay the doctor up front and then claim back on insurance (if it's less than your excess) but it's worth asking if they accept your EHIC or GHIC card.

A general note for anyone travelling to Austria from the UK - OTC medicines that cost next to nothing in the UK (e.g. Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, Anthisan, Imodium etc.) are very expensive in Austria, so always pack some if you think you might need them.
