Morning all, I’ve made a bit of a mess with a holiday booking and was hoping someone might have some suggestions. I have booked flights for 7 days flying into Esbjerg. Plan was to stay at Campsite Feldberg but the dates don’t work. Does anyone have any alternative? Will be travelling with an 8 year old and a 4 year old

You could get a bus to Billund and stay at Lalandia, which is a Center Parcs style place for some or all of the time. There's also the original Legoland there.

As it happens, I used to do the opposite trip for work and always flew into Billund, but had to work in Esberg, which seemed like a nice little town, plus there's beaches and nature reserves, so maybe try and get a hotel/apartment for a couple of days, then move on to Billund.

Another vote for Lalandia Billund. But if you want something a bit more low key or they don’t have the dates you want, try Ribe Byferie. The facilities there are great. There’s also CampWest nearby.

Thank you both off to google

We book summer houses, camping in Denmark can be very wet and you don't want to be traipsing across a campsite to the toilets with a 4yr old every night if they wake up cold/damp! Try Sol og Strand for summerhouses in the area

Another vote for Lalandia - it's really great!

Littleelffriend · 04/08/2023 19:20

Thanks all I looked at Lalandia is it worth the money? I couldn’t figure out what was included

If you stay at Lalandia, you’ll get free access to the Aquadome and the soft play area. You have to pay extra for the activities like mini golf, trampolines and climbing.
We got the most basic type of accommodation and it was lovely and much bigger than I anticipated. It’s not luxurious but it’s not stingy either – I hate arriving and realising you have to buy literally everything, from loo rolls and sponges up – and everything was clean and in good repair. You do, however, have to pay a hire charge for towels and bed linen.
If you’re on a budget there is a supermarket so you can buy and prepare your own meals back at the accommodation. A word of warning: at the end of your stay you are required to pay for the water and electricity used inside your holiday home. We were a bit apprehensive about how much this might come to but we received an invoice via email on our departure day and it was only around £5.

We stayed at Hestkaer Family Rooms, it was great.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/08/2023 08:09

That probably makes a Lalandia stay quite good value. I paid to go into the aquadome when I had half a day to kill waiting for a flight and it was about £25 and that was a few years ago. It had a lovely spa area as well as the water slides and fun pools.

You guys are the best thank you so much. I knew someone on here would help

There's a great little apart-hotel close to Legoland and Lalandia, it's called Go-Sleep Vandel (short drive from Billund)

Havanananana · 05/08/2023 21:47

From Esbjerg it is a short (30-40 min) bus ride to Billund, which is actually a great place for a holiday with children. As well as the obvious Legoland and Lego House, there is also Lalandia and the WOW Park.

I have it on good authority (from 2 kids - aged 9 and 7) that WOW Park is the best of these. It is very non-commercial, very rustic and great fun for a day of adventure activities. Take a picnic, wear clothes that can tolerate a bit of dirt, and enjoy something quite unlike anything in the UK.

Littleelffriend · 07/08/2023 09:08

@Havanananana did you travel to wow park by public transport?

Not sure on accommodation, but Ribe is a beautiful town just south of Esbjerg, well worth a visit - disclaimer, it's more than 20 years since I've been, and then only briefly, but it was beautiful, with Torks nesting on the red roof tops.

Havanananana · 07/08/2023 09:29

@Littleelffriend We drove by car to WOW.

The public transport options are very limited. Some of the regional buses stop on the main road about 1km/15 mins walk from WOW Park, and it is possible to book a "Flextur" (Dial-a-ride) minibus that will take you all the way to the park. But it's probably easiest to jump in a taxi - it is only just on the outskirts of Billund.

For all public transport options in Denmark - see Rejseplanen

Havanananana · 07/08/2023 16:22

Ribe is still beautiful - but the storks are now sadly a rare sight, both in Ribe and in Denmark in general.

The south of Denmark has several very picturesque towns, including Tønder and Sønderborg.

Littleelffriend · 07/08/2023 19:43

Am making a list of all this thanks

Although public transport is generally excellent in Denmark, Billund is possibly the one place that is not particularly well-served. There is no rail connection and the bus connections to elsewhere are fairly limited. If you are restricted to public transport then Ribe, Tønder and Sønderborg are going to be a stretch from Billund (but both Ribe and Tønder are very easy to get to by train from Esbjerg if you're going to be based there for your holiday).

If you are going to be based in Billund without your own transport, you can still get to some interesting places. Vejle has the Økolariet science centre, which is a good 2-hour activity centre designed for kids (the bus from Billund stops at Vejle Bus Station, which is 5 mins from Økolariet). Kolding (bus or train from Vejle) has a castle, Koldinghus, and a kid's activity centre "Nikolai".
