55mph winds and heavy rain forecast for our 5 hour ferry crossing at the moment. Does anyone know how bad it has to be for the ferry company to cancel the sailing?

Also, any tips on managing seasickness much appreciated… I know to look at the horizon (or lie down and shut eyes), will take travel
sickness medication in advance too…

Not looking forward to this!!

Sea bands, ginger tablets, sea sick pills called Sturgeon. The key is to take the pills BEFORE you feel sick, otherwise they won't work

We came home Dieppe/Newhaven about 28 months ago in a storm. The crossing took a lot longer than it should, but no one was ill. Boats have pretty effective stabilisation now. V different from trips to Ireland in my youth when about 90% of the passengers sat in the middle looking green and puking.

18 months! Feb half term!

Been in worse, Shetland ferries rarely get cancelled despite terrible conditions.

I recommend listening to music, ideally lying down with eyes shut. As well as the pills of course. If it’s a big ferry they are unlikely to cancel but you will feel some movement.

Thanks all! I spent much of my childhood vomiting on Dover-Calais ferries so am dreading this with the forecast as it is!

I already have some Sturgeron and some Kwells and (won’t take both at the same time tho) and o know to take 2 hours before you board. I also have the travel bands.

really hope the forecast improves. Just looked at 55mph is well into gale force territory!!

How was it @Porthia ? Have a similar crossing coming up and not looking forward to it! I foolishly thought it’d be calm in the summer months.

Meadowfly · 04/08/2023 04:54

Same here! Not a great end to our holiday!

Seafarer · 04/08/2023 21:41

Good luck @Meadowfly am hoping the forecasters get it wrong and the storm time changes!

If you are sailing from Dover, be prepared for a long queue at the border control. Took us 90 mins last week to get through.
