Fjords cruise - general advice and adjoining rooms question

Hello,

We would like to do a one week Fjords cruise next summer. It will be me, DH, DMIL and DD who will be six years old.

We’ve never done a cruise, so any advice at all would be fantastic and very gratefully received.

More specifically, we would really like to have two adjoining rooms, or at least guaranteed next to each other.

Any hints and tips would be great!

Thanks 🥂

We’ve done a week’s Fjords cruise on P&O Iona and really enjoyed it.

If you look at the deck plans for the ship you’re going on, you can usually see which adjoining rooms there are and can book exactly which cabin you want.

One of the benefits of cruising is you usually can pick your room rather than being allocated it.

Have a look at the CruiseMummy blog, she’s got great tips about travelling with kids on cruises and goes through the different cabins on different ships.

Some fantastic deals with P&O at the moment. The saver deals are bargainous, however, that would be harder to guarantee cabins together. The select fare is more expensive but you can literally choose cabins together then. I’ve cruised with Royal Caribbean and we always try and get mid ship away from the lifts which can be noisy.

I’ve never had a balcony cabin but people say they’re a must for the fjords, however, We spend a lot of time out on deck and only sleep in the cabin, think about what’s best for your family. It have one with a balcony and then choose an interior opposite you and you can then share.

I'd imagine for guarantees you are best booking early. It may not be the cheapest but you often can choose meal times and table size too, making it a more positive experience.

We did the fjords as a family of 4 (kids 8 and 10) and a last minute deal. We shared a cabin and it was fine as we were hardly in there at all. I think they saw two kids and decided to give us a table for 4 but it wasn't guaranteed. We also had to eat at 6.30 if we wanted the main dining room as it was a late booking and the 8.30s had all gone.

I understand why you want 2 cabins. You don't have to be next to each other, same corridor would be OK as your DD has an adult with her, but I can see why you'd like to be close by.

We did the fjords with a outside view cabin. A balcony we'd only have seen.one side sailing in.we went onto Highland deck (Balmoral) and it was a fabulous sail in.

I guess you could do a balcony cabin and the inside cabin opposite. After all they can all join you for the balcony experience during the day.

You can pay to choose your room so you can choose adjoining and interconnecting depending on ship.

FjordingHell · 30/07/2023 19:34

Thank you. That is all really helpful.

Incredibly stupid question - but I’m looking at P&O, but I can’t work out how to add a second cabin to the booking, which means I can’t see the interconnecting rooms. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong?!

Thanks again!

I’m not sure if you can book more than one cabin at once on the P&O website, or at least I’ve played around with it just now and can’t seem to do it.

We use Iglu Cruise to book cruises and I know you can book multiple cabins at the same time with them.

There are other specialist cruise travel agents too, often you can get a good deal with them.

If you know which ship you’d like to cruise on, the deck plan will show the interconnecting rooms which can be helpful

wendywoopywoo222 · 30/07/2023 21:06

I use Bolsover to book cruises. If you use a cruise agent they will make sure you have interconnecting rooms. Just make sure you say that you don't want upgrades or you might find they only upgrade one room and you end up not being together.

We went with Royal Caribbean in a balcony cabin. Views are beautiful when you're sailing in to dock during the early hours. Decks were rammed for the views on the way back out of the fjord so we viewed from our cabin.

If you're prone to seasickness then choose a cabin in the middle of the ship but not near a lift/stairwell. Make sure you don't book a deck underneath a disco/entertainment area as they can apparently be noisy.

Join Cruise Critic to go on their forums. I found them invaluable for advice because you can also get information and room tips for the specific ship you'll be sailing on.

You'll love it.

Im doing this cruise next Sumner on Iona. Should I be booking meals and things now?
How do I do that?
One of my children has special needs and we need to go to mealtimes when it's quieter if possible.

Hello all.

Just wanted to say thanks for all your advice. We booked the cruise for next year and can’t wait!

Might be back to ask more questions closer to the time, but really appreciate your answers and suggestions.

🥂
