What % of income do you spend?

I'm looking at holidays for our family next summer - 2 kids, 2 adults. Europe, prefer all inclusive. And the sums of money being asked make me want to weep. Yes I know things change and I'm tight. But I'm amazed how many friends and colleagues are out abroad enjoying themselves; how do they spend the money?

So my question is, what % of your annual income would you spend on a holiday?

For full disclosure, this year we had a week away for 1% of our income but it was in the UK and self catered so probably nearer 2% when spending money was accounted for.

We go on holiday every month since we retired early at Easter. We spend about 30% of our income on holidays over the year.
We do a mix of long haul, short haul, cruise, campervan, lodges, spa/hotel breaks, motorbike tours, festivals, city breaks, center parcs with the adult dc and gdc etc

Sounds amazing! I have to have something booked every month, be it a weekend away, a big long haul trip or a week in Europe. I can’t get through the year otherwise!

I only have 27 days annual leave (+ 8 bank holidays) to play with, so it takes a lot of planning. Can’t wait for retirement and being able to get away at the drop of a hat. Your life sounds great 😍

About 10% including spending money but we would go away about 3 times a year, usually 2 UK, 1 EU

This year for example is 3 nights in Wales, 2 weeks in france and 1 week camping

About 5%, but that's on 3-4 holidays a year. I prefer to have more, cheaper holidays than one big one. Having said that, next year we are doing one big holiday for my husband's big birthday.

So this year for example we have done a road trip around Iceland, a week camping in Cornwall, 10 days eurocamp in france, and a long weekend in Paris/ Disney.

About 15% spread over a few breaks a year.

PandaPacer · 31/07/2023 12:57

A bit less than 10% of our take home, and that's for 2 adults and 2 teenagers 17 and 15. We're doing two holidays this summer (one week in Spain, two weeks in Scandinavia) because our eldest is doing A levels next year so it will be a year until we can go away again - so we are blowing it all and discussing in earnest what we want to do next summer.

I spend about a month's salary, including spending money while out there.

Tryingtohelp12 · 31/07/2023 13:15

This year sadly no big abroad holiday for us - lots of little camping trips (5 so far and at least 1 more planned) which is about 1% of our after tax income (including day trips/activities etc). If we’d had a big aboard holiday it would have been about 6% after tax

dun1urkin · 31/07/2023 13:19

The equivalent of one months joint take home, over two-ish holidays per year.

KEVINNNN · 31/07/2023 13:27

I have spent 80% of my PAYE income this year on holidays! I only work to pay for holidays!
For full disclosure though, my mortgage is paid off, my partner works and I have decent saving that at the moment I'm getting good interest on.

BlowDryRat · 31/07/2023 13:31

This year it's 5% of my income. Next year it's 10%. I prioritise holidays and we do a lot while we're out there.

Livemenot · 27/04/2024 20:04

Monthly joint income with my DH, 2-3 holidays per year, one child. We love and prioritise holidays over other things.

MissAmbrosia · 27/04/2024 21:16

Not sure exactly - maybe 10% - though DH has retired this year so it will probably increase as a %. Normally I book self catering accommodation - villa or apartment vs hotels in general, but then we eat out and do trips. I do like a nice hotel and have stayed in some lovely ones, but ideally anything over 3 nights I like to have my own space, washing machine, not have to get dressed to go to breakfast. I normally book quite early to get a bargain. I do prioritise travel over other things.
