Wieliczka Salt Mine tour

AccidentallySuckedTheStrippersDick · 29/07/2023 14:41

There is an amazing little cafe not far from main square cause gospoda koko . You go in and it looks like this tiny little grannies dining room but then you go through the arch way at the back and it is all subterranean multi level arched caverns. HUGE compared to what you are expecting! They often have live music etc and the food is great and very reasonably priced. They serve alcohol too.

We went to Aushwitz with a private tour company. It was very interesting but in December it was brutally cold in the second part. So much so I came back with pneumonia! The salt mine is also worth a trip.

Lost Souls Alley if you dare! Absolutely unique and brilliant but scary as hell.
Piano Bar in main square for quirky drinkery. There are a few restaurants round there too.
Salt Mines, takes about 3 hours
Auschwitz, sobering but fascinating
There’s a really colourful (inside) church you can visit if that’s your thing.
Wawel Castle even if just an outside look.

AuntieMarys · 29/07/2023 15:40

Thanks we have the camps booked...and I did Lost Souls Alley a few years ago! Never again! Planning to spend a full day in Jewish quarter....have got Hamsa in mind

Definitely agree with the salt mine - it was absolutely incredible, I'll literally remember it forever 😍

I LOVE Gospoda Koko! Great dumplings.

In Kazimierz: Singer, Absynt.

Also pijalnia wódki i piwa and Bania Luka are SUPER cheap and great to stop in for a drink. Particularly Bania Luka.

WildImaginings · 29/07/2023 15:52

Hamsa is worth a visit for a mulled beer or cider.

WildImaginings · 29/07/2023 15:53

(We always stay in Kazimierz because I love the atmosphere there and we spend most of our time there, but it's still walkable to the town square etc.)

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 29/07/2023 16:01

The stained glass museum is an utter delight and the young woman who showed us round was totally passionate about her work. A fascinating gem.

We also enjoyed the Technical Museum, which happened to have a magnificent 'have a go at this/this is how it works' exhibition for children, we had a go at everything and it was great. We were 68 and 83 so not just for kids!

AuntieMarys · 29/07/2023 16:07

Yes had Bania Luka and stained glass museum on list.
Interesting so many of you recommend the Salt mines....I shall go and read more about it. My initial thought was no.

@WildImaginings I agree with you on that.

Babdoc · 29/07/2023 16:13

You need strong legs for the salt mine. You walk down staircases for hundreds of feet to reach them. However, the good news is there’s a lift to come back up!
They are worth it. There is virtually an underground cathedral, with soaring roof and statues of saints carved out of the salt, tableaux of previous kings ditto, and you can see where the pit ponies lived. It really is an amazing place. I still have a large pink salt crystal on my mantelpiece that I brought home as a souvenir.

WildImaginings · 29/07/2023 16:28

We really enjoyed the Salt Mines. Very interesting.

I do spend a large portion of every trip eating pierogi, I'll be honest!

Lollipopsandcandycanes · 29/07/2023 16:34

Another vote for Gospoda Koko. Delicious food and so cheap.

Cillmantain · 29/07/2023 16:36

Hamsa for food
Their wine is really good too

foreverbasil · 29/07/2023 16:48

Restaurant called Hevre. It's in an old synagogue, very atmospheric. There is a lot of pushy selling of Auschwitz. It's a very personal decision to go. We didn't.
The salt mine is great and an amazing 'health spa' called Wielicsa easy to get to by public bus.

DonkeysForCourses · 29/07/2023 16:50

I will also never forget the salt mines; absolutely incredible.

Yes I've got Hevre on the list. I've been to the camps before but dh hasn't. Right I'm going to do the Salt mines...maybe the last day as we don't fly till 8pm.

Don't go to Gospoda Koko, it's a tourist trap. Wisniowy Sad is much better if you fancy some dumplings. Szara Ges w Kuchni is good for fine dining and definitely try some cherry liqueur in Wisniewski at plac Szczepanski. Krakow has a great cafe scene, so almost any place you go into will be great, but my favourites are Pozegnanie z Afryka and NIC.Kawiarnio-Ksiegarnia. Bazaar Bistro in Kazimierz for breakfast! Also another vote for Salt Mines in Wieliczka, and if you have some time you can visit Live Bagel Museum of Krakow.
