Rainy Eurocamp holiday to Brittany & Vendee - ideas

Porthia · 27/07/2023 11:04

I obviously wouldn’t want scorching temperatures and wildfires but currently gearing up for a wet(ish) Eurocamp holiday to NW France.

Any tips on things to see and do or how to keep kids occupied on a Eurocamp type break in the rain?

we will be in Brittany and then down towards the end of the Loire around the Vendee!

The Brittany Tourism site has some suggestions but it will depend where you are. I like the look of the boaty things!

Similarly this site has suggestions for Vendee.

We've been to both areas several times but always been lucky with the weather so I can't recommend anything personally.

Will you be going anywhere near Futuroscope? That’s brilliant for a wet weather day.

cherryassam · 27/07/2023 14:07

Some things we’ve done in the general area when it’s been rainy:

  • L’ile aux Papillons in La Gueriniere (butterfly house)
  • Cite de Telecoms and the Planetarium near Pleumer Badou
  • The arcades / amusement centres in Saint Jean de Monts
  • Ocearium Croisic in Le Croisic (aquarium)
  • St Malo Aquarium
  • Oceanopolis Brest (you may have noticed we like aquariums!)
  • Choclate Museum in La Roche sur Yon

Have you got indoor pools where you’re staying? If not, the municipal pools are generally really good in our experience, so might be worth finding where they are.

We had a surprisingly good afternoon at https://www.alligator-bay.com/en/ which is just by the Mont Saint Michel carpark.

Alligator Bay

An animal park like no other!

Ooh some great ideas here thank you!

we won’t be down quite so far as Futuroscope but will be near mont st michel for part of our trip and then just north of La Rochelle so quite a few good options here! Keep ‘em coming!

Heard st Malo is nice but haven't been

Brintons · 28/07/2023 09:24

We have been in North Brittany for the past week and going to Normandy for another week. The weather hasn't been bad as the forecasts suggest. We have had quite a few beach days. Only a couple of rainy half days. I would much rather have this weather than boiling hot!

La Rochelle Aquarium - in case you need another aquarium!
La Rochelle itself is lovely and has quite a few streets with covered pavements, you could climb the two towers for an indoor activity, go on a public boat ride (they are closed boats) or even go to Fort Boyard

DutchCowgirl · 28/07/2023 09:37

We are in southern brittany now and the the rain isn’t so bad as the forecast suggested. It rains mostly at night /evenings/early mornings, but we’ve been able to go to the pool/beach every day.

One morning it was really bad and we spent some hours in a big hypermarche.

Last year we did Alligator bay and the kids loved it, much better then Mont saint michel😂
We also did Cite du Telecom last year, also great!
But here in the south there aren’t any “big” attractions nearby i guess.

BareBelliedSneetch · 28/07/2023 09:40

We will be on the south coast of Brittany at the end of august, so these suggestions might be very, very useful - thank you!

The aquarium in St Malo worked well for us on a wet day.

Lisbeth50 · 28/07/2023 10:28

We always go for a site with an indoor pool in case of rain.

We've had a couple of holidays in that area when the weather's been wet. We've visited Alligator Bay, Mont St Michel, St Malo & Dinan all in the rain.

holidaydreaming · 28/07/2023 10:44

If you are anywhere near Puy du Fou I would def go. I'd happily drive 90 mins to it. It is mainly outdoors but is so brilliant and nothing stops for rain. We've just been and it is a big day out so you can then spend the next day playing games and going for coffee/chocolat chaud without feeling guilty.

Zooparc de Beauvais is an incredible zoo in the Loire for your second week.

I am not a zoo fan but the work done for conservation there is fantastic. It really is stunning.Lots of tree cover and indoor bits.

They have Giant Pandas, who had babies a few years ago.

sandycloud · 28/07/2023 11:09

I would also say puy de foy. We have been twice. It's amazing. I saw an article about it being the best theme park in the world and it doesn't have rides.

gogomoto · 28/07/2023 11:26

Futurascope was good 8 years ago admittedly. The submarine pens in Nantes, take wetsuits and surf, rain doesn't matter then
