Would you book a NYC city break if TTC?

We will be TTC from November. After research, considering a last min city break to NYC. If we are successful immediately in November cycle I would be 19 weeks on the trip, if it’s the following month I’d be 15 weeks, or the following 11 weeks. Etc

We have conceived immediately once before and we are not 30+ so hopefully no-known obstacles ahead of us when TTC.

I have been to New York before and remember it is a lot of walking & the long flight/time zone changes can be jarring. Would you go there given there’s a strong chance you’d be somewhere within the 2nd trimester, or not? Considering all factors - healthcare in America, cost of travel insurance to go, length of flight, walking…

Just book it Smile not meaning to be a party pooper but more than likely you won't be pregnant that soon and, if you are, just take it slower and enjoy the fact you were lucky to get pregnant quickly.

I did a lot of 'might be' and got stressed out when ttc initially about if it fitted with plans coming up. In reality it took quite a few months and sO was important to just get on with life. Only things I'd avoid now are holidays to Zika areas or skiing holidays which are expensive to cancel if needed.

It wouldn’t cross my mind to limit holidays unless I was close to due date / past when you’re allowed to fly. I’d be getting as many in as possible before baby arrives.

I think you'll be fine. You don't have to walk everywhere. If you've been before you'll probably be more likely to use the subway. You must have an idea of what you'd like to do and how tiring it would be.

What things were you wanting to do?

You'd still be in the easier first half of pregnancy and not drinking isn't much of a hardship when everything costs a squillion dollars. I'm pretty sure I didn't drink much last time we were there as prices were eye watering.

Flight to NYC pretty easy. Coming back not too bad. I find returning from the west coast causes more jet lag on the way home. Worst case scenario you're up early for sightseeing and in bed early which is no different whether you are pregnant or not.

I don't think walking would be an issue. I would be more concerned about other symptoms such as severe morning sickness etc whilst on holiday, particularly for the first trimester. I was on holiday this year when i was about 6 weeks, and a few symptoms started to kick in, all i wanted to do was be at home. You don't know what symptoms you will have until you are pregnant.
For travel insurance you would have to speak to the insurer, some you don't even have to tell because they don't see it as a medical condition, if you were considered a high risk pregnancy then you probably would, but you wouldn't know that until you were actually pregnant.
Could you not set aside a week, book off work (if you need to) then book the holiday last minute when you know how you are feeling, how many weeks pregnant you are.

I was 15 weeks pregnant when we went to New York for the first time and it was fine, I just went with my body clock so up early, rest for a couple of hours in the afternoon and then back out in the evening for dinner or theatre and bed pretty early ish aswell, I was tired but so was my husband! We had an amazing time.

JC89 · 25/07/2023 16:46

Book it, but it might be worth not TTC on the cycle that would put you at 11 weeks (I was off work at that point with pregnancy sickness for both my viable pregnancies. I didn't want to leave the house let alone go on holiday!)

JC89 · 25/07/2023 16:47

And make sure you have travel insurance that will cover you if you need to get checked while you are there!

How is a "last minute" trip if you aren't TTCing for another 3 months and could be up to 4 months pregnant when there? Surely a last minute trip means soon?

memyselfi · 25/07/2023 17:13

Do not put your life on hold.

prayforthecottransfer · 25/07/2023 19:31

You'll be fine! I was 19 weeks pregnant last year when I went to Florida in August. Take plenty of rest breaks, keep hydrated and you'll be fine.

dmorse · 25/07/2023 19:37

If you collect Avios (BA points) book it with those, because if you cancel you get all of the points back. Then book the hotel with someone like booking.com who will give you free last minute cancellation. That way, if you get to the day before you want to go and you don't feel up to it, or feel it'll be too risky, you can just cancel the lot and not be out of pocket.

metellaestinatrio · 26/07/2023 19:12

We went when I was 8 weeks pregnant (booked when TTC thinking it would take ages and got lucky!) and it was fine. I was pretty tired in the evenings but I think I would have been anyway after all the walking. I would however avoid the Coney Island funfair as you can’t go on anything (and it’s a loooong trip on the subway to discover you can’t actually do much…first pregnancy so I didn’t realise)!

That being said, I wasn’t sick at all - if you’re in the early stages of pregnancy and have your head down the loo every five minutes you won’t really be able to enjoy the trip. You say you’ve been pregnant before so hopefully you have a steer on how likely this is to happen. Maybe book flights and hotels that can be cancelled as PP have suggested if you think there’s a risk you could be really struggling with pregnancy symptoms?
