Teacher hubby- help

Any ideas on how to have a foreign holiday without it costing the earth? Husband is a teacher so no option to do it non term time even tho DD is only 3. We lived abroad for a few years and stupidly forgot the uk holiday premium for school hols.
No way we can afford the thousands of pounds I've seen for a week in the sun, but also I may go mad with another uk break where it rains non stop again

We book the flights as soon as they come out (about a year in advance) and book accommodation separately, works out much cheaper that way

What about a house swap?

SleepingStandingUp · 20/07/2023 08:56

Go without him?
I'm only half joking..

Look at TUI late deals, as an example you can get a week all inclusive next week for around £650 in the Canary Islands.

We saved over £1000 last summer (family of four) by driving half way down through France instead of flying. That saving took an overnight stop-off hotel each way plus meals into consideration. Actually the journey was quite fun as we stopped for activities along the way.

Do check dates of holidays.
Quite often, the area I teach in have a slightly different half term week in October and February .
Those might come up cheaper if your different to others.

I'm a teacher and we've been all over the place. Never a package. Book bits independently then you can cut costs where you want to.
Croatia, Italy and Slovenia (last summer), France camping many times (look at huttopia etc), Sri Lanka, Borneo. All for 2+ weeks and mostly comparable prices to friends week all inclusive in Greece. Rarely booked before Easter - my teacher brain just can't think that far ahead.

I was also going to advise flying from Scotland if you live in the north but have different holiday patterns to there.
DS has different term dates to me to add to the mix as well, meaning my cheaper week (less schools on half term) doesn't fit with his more coming half term week.

We always drove to France.
Probably not practical (financially) for many but one teacher I know ended up buying a small apartment in Spain then was able to spend the whole 6 weeks there. Short term spend for long term savings!

If you're with someone who's a school based worker then you're going to have to suck up rainy getaways in UK or an expensive holiday abroad.

We spent years doing wet holidays in cottages around the uk but these seem to be even more expensive, now, so holidays abroad seem cheaper but still cost eye watering amounts.

There's not much you can do about it.
Jersey and Guernsey have much better weather but they're expensive places to holiday in.

I feel for you.

Cardiff?

I've gone to Bristol when the holidays are other way round (not that theres a huge choice from Cardiff)

If you can access the Plymouth ferry port, investigate the 24h ferry to Santander, Spain. You can be in Barcelona a few hours later.
