Rubbish Holiday Weather

Feeling really deflated. I know we're lucky to be going on holiday at all but we decided to stay in the UK this year and it looks like it's going to be a total washout. We have a caravan booked in Hayle near St Ives from Saturday 22nd July for a week and the weather forecast shows grey skies and rain pretty much every day. I had a really difficult winter and was SO looking forward to seeing the sun and relaxing away from work. Not expecting bikini weather but it would be nice to go out in a tshirt rather than a kagool!

I know I shouldn't complain, particularly with half of Europe baking in extreme heat, but I just can't get excited about going away right now. I'm taking my DD (17) and her friend too and am worried they'll be bored.

Has anyone got experience of the weather in that part of the world, do you think it will be miserable all week?

We've just got back from a Norfolk holiday and the weather was hit and Miss but we still had a great time. There were periods of dry weather when we went to the beach, and periods of wet when we went to arcades, restaurants, swimming, indoor attractions.

Have a Google and make a list of stuff you can do inside in the area so you have it ready if you need it, look for stuff that can be done outside on dull or slightly drizzly days and then use the sun wisely as you get it, we were on the beach at 8am one day because the dry weather was only due to last till 10am then we went back after dinner because the sun came out in the evening.

We're away at the end of the month and I'm desperately hoping the weather improves. I don't want to spend my summer break shivering with a coat and umbrella, I get to do that most of the year. The incessant rain is really starting to take a toll on my mood now.

rosydreams · 19/07/2023 09:47

This is why when ever i book a uk holiday park i get one with a indoor pool. That way if the weather sucks at least theres something to do on site lol

But yeah i am booked for the 28th rip this weather looks like it gonna suck

I am going to look up indoor activities for were we are going and make the best of it .Thats all you can do really ,just go on google maps and book mark some stuff

LaKaAl · 19/07/2023 13:30

Yep, definitely here to stay by the looks of it. Oh well, I suppose i'll just have to put my raincoat on and get on with it - could be worse, I could be at work I suppose! I'll start looking for some indoor fun, although very difficult to please teenagers!

@rosydreams @DrCoconut I hope the weather cheers up in time for your holidays!

We're going away the same week and it's not looking great 😕 We've got some indoor things to do but it would be nice to go on the beach with DC.

LauraNicolaides · 19/07/2023 13:40

Really hope it does cheer up for you. For what it's worth I'd rather have grey British drizzle than the horrible inferno that is currently southern Europe!

MySoCalledWife · 19/07/2023 13:44

Cornwall is great, there will be sunny spells

last time I went I wore my rain jacket every day… but also swam in the sea, went for lovely walks and came home with a tan

mogtheexcellent · 19/07/2023 13:56

I feel your pain. We are off camping next week, our first holiday as just us since before covid. Couldnt afford much so camping in Dorset. We have had holidays with wider family and my parents live by the sea so its not that we havent had the chance to get away over the last few years but I really wanted next week not to be a complete washout.

Its annoying. I bet the weather is amazing late August when we usually go away with the inlaws to thei holiday home even though it pissed it down last year.

This is good advice. We did similar recently in Scotland with very mixed weather. Introduce the DC to some new board games, look up some new box sets for if you end up having some evenings inside, make a list of activities that you can do in grey/damp/wet weather, get plenty of nice snacks, drinks etc. so it feels like a treat. Get the teens involved in looking for stuff to do - they may find things via Google that you wouldn't get.

stilldumdedumming · 19/07/2023 14:07

It's a pain and I get fed up with it too. But the BBC forecast isn't that bad. It's changeable and on the coast it can defy the forecast.

I go to Hayle regularly. Went in April in changeable weather and it was mainly ok. The sea side is great for watching big weather roll in!

You do tend to spend more then tho.

Will they go in the sea. If so can you hire wetsuits and have hot chocolate treats? Cinema in Penzance by train? Surfing lessons. Eat at Duckies in town. (Have to get an ad in for my mates place!). Falmouth is cool and a bit arty and also you can get the train which I think is always more exciting for teenagers.

finewelshcheese · 19/07/2023 14:08

I would just crack on.

We went to Wales the other week where there was a similar forecast - showery, some sunny spells. We only actually had two showers all week, it all blows over quicker at the coast!

VenusClapTrap · 19/07/2023 16:00

We always take board games when we go on U.K. holidays. Once spent a whole week in a tent in Wales playing Pandemic. It was a fun holiday!

MrsMarieMopps · 19/07/2023 16:22

You're allowed to be disappointed. I think there's two types of people. Some people can crack on with it. I find it difficult to have fun in the rain. I keep thinking this would be much nicer if it was sunny. To be honest I've abandoned uk holidays in the summer after paying so much money to get rained on. May half term is generally sunnier.

MayBe6 · 19/07/2023 16:28

We are going away on Friday to Devon, I feel exactly the same- lucky that we get to go away but a bit miffed at the weather forecast! We went away in august last year and it was glorious. Good luck!

PureLife89 · 19/07/2023 16:33

Just looked at St Ives weather. Most days are 20/30% chance of rain so you might be lucky

Also, I don't take weather predictions seriously if they're more than 48hrs ahead

Coastal weather in particular can change very fast so come next week it might be nicer than predicted right now

Roselilly36 · 19/07/2023 17:03

It’s fine to be disappointed, but try not to worry, forecasts aren’t always right. I am sure you will have a lovely holiday and find some nice things to do.

TitInATrance · 19/07/2023 17:08

I was near there camping last weekend, when we were forecast torrential rain and thunderstorms all day on Saturday.
It was bright with sunny spells and occasional light showers. There’s every chance the rain will miss the coast. It can be a little bit chilly in the wind at times, pack a thick jumper.

fussychica · 19/07/2023 17:31

Sometimes in Cornwall you can avoid the bad weather by swapping coasts. Hope the forecast is about as accurate as they often are and you get better weather than you're expecting.

I was just about to say this. I live on the south coast of Cornwall and often if it's raining here it will be fine on the north coast or vice versa, so it's worth checking the forecast each morning for each coast to decide where is best to spend your day.
