When do you fly? BBC weather is showing a forecast of 35-40 degrees every day for the next 2 weeks… 😓

Maddy70 · 17/07/2023 07:46

Tbf the press are doing what they do best. It's only a degree or 2 more than usual in wyeiow for this time of year. I live in Spain ans I saw something on the bbc "warning Brits". There is no mention of anything in our spanish press

It's hot but doesn't feel hotter realistically than any other summer

The met office forecast for next weekend is saying 42. That sounds debilitating.

I'm just wondering how long it's likely to last. Does it stay this hot for a month? Or just a couple of weeks....?

OP posts:
CoffeeNCroissants · 17/07/2023 08:19

Is anyone over there now?

Think not what climate change will do for your holiday flight, but what your holiday flight will do for climate change

ssd · 17/07/2023 08:20

I guess its hard to know, just be prepared.

Okay, well no one knows what the temperature will be like on Aug 3rd!

Sicily is very hot in August in a normal year, so I’m afraid you were always going to get scorching weather (perhaps not 40 degrees though!)

I hope you have a wonderful holiday anyway - Sicily is one of my favourite places in Europe. 💜

YeaGads · 17/07/2023 09:21

@AuntieJune very occasionally I read some real wit on MN, thank you for your homage to JFK.

I’m afraid this has not been my experience of European heatwaves.

When the South of France had a heatwave last year (43 degrees in Biarritz when we were there…), there were people on this Board claiming it was just the British press ‘scare-mongering’, but that didn’t stop it being debilitating heat and nothing like I had experienced on previous trips to the South of France.

We had to spend the whole day at the pool as you literally couldn’t do anything else. I think travellers have a right to be warned about this, because it completely changes the kind of holiday they can expect to have.

Nightmare 🤣

Baffles me why anyone would think it would be anything less than scorching hot in the Med in July/August, chuck climate change in and it's guaranteed surely?

I tend to agree with this, however there is a big difference (for me, at least) between 30-35 degrees and 40-45 degrees.

I suppose people take the risk expecting the former (which is still more common) and occasionally get the latter.

AuntieJune · 17/07/2023 09:43

@YeaGads 😀thanks

might as well post the same comment on other threads with people complaining how climate change related heatwaves will impact their holidays

I'd love it if we transitioned to slightly longer holidays and went by rail or boat more. I don't think we can keep on like this.

I suspect somebody will be along in a minute and mention bunker fuel….

got to agree - I know siciliy/sardinia well - the locals stay inside for as much of the mid-day period as they can* - meanwhile, mad dogs and englishmenwomen ..

  • and they often complain.

Whereabouts in Spain do you live? Murcia is expected to reach 43c which is 10 degrees above average for the time of year.

I was in Murcia earlier this week, it was 42 degrees more than once in the shade, including on our covered back terrace. The Murcian authorities have issued orange health warnings for this week. Our gardener worked 9am till 12, then 7.30pm till 9.30pm.

The weather is definitely hotter than usual for this time of year and everyone is struggling with it, including the locals.

minipie · 17/07/2023 16:19

El Nino.

Hoppinggreen · 17/07/2023 16:21

We own a property in Southern Spain, we never go in July or August

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 17/07/2023 17:40

I went to Sardinia 7 years ago in late July and it was unbearable All we could do was get in the sea which was amazingly cold to get cool and eat gelato. Any sight seeing was out of the question.

No idea what the temp actually was but I'd say mid 30 then.
