Slightly nervous about our August holiday now 😳

It’s only half way through July…

TwilightSkies · 15/07/2023 17:58

I would be too! It looks horrendous.

Do you think it might pass???

Me too OP. Due to go 29th July. Hoping it will be a short one?!

Melassa · 15/07/2023 18:05

it will rain before then. Traditionally August used to get a fair few end of summer thunderstorms, usually in the second half. Every year they’ve got earlier because it’s been getting hot sooner, meaning July has been hotter than August.

where I am (north) we’ve had several thunderstorms, which has cooled down the evenings and we’ve had cycles of hot days followed by cooler ones. It’s actually been more pleasant than previous years.

If you’re going to lakes and beaches the sea breeze and surrounding greenery will make it bearable. I wouldn’t traipse around cities though, unless from one air conditioned museum to the next. Churches are also often cooler, but open air sites are best visited early morning. Or in the spring.

Heatwave?! Jealous. Now you've made me browse Italian holidays. Hotter the better 🔥

Aria20 · 15/07/2023 18:10

We are going to Sardinia on Tuesday.... hoping it's not too unbearably hot! We have air con and a pool at least!

Where are you going?

MissPop · 15/07/2023 18:14

Off to Spain mid August. Hoping it’s cooled down a bit.

Where are you going?

Sicily 😳🔥

We're south of Pisa right now on holiday, near the coast. It'svery hot and more humid than we expected. Pisa itself was roasting on Weds, today seems a bit less humid but still very hot.
We've had to rethink our plans to visit Florence and Siena, maybe do more coastal stuff.

Leftbutcameback · 15/07/2023 18:37

Sicily is roasting right now. What’s the average August temperature? Presume you thought that would be ok? No reason it should be any hotter than that.

Melassa · 15/07/2023 18:54

Sicily 😳🔥

Ah. I was just about to ask it’s not Sicily is it 😱😂. Buy a lilo. Stay in the sea/pool/whatever body of water you can find.

Seriously though if you have a hotel/villa and car with aircon you’ll be fine. Some of the older places to visit might not have aircon but they were built with lots of cool areas or courtyards, because Sicily has been hot since the beginning of time so people built to manage the heat. Just stay out of the midday sun and keep hydrated, do what the locals do. If you’re near the coast there will be a breeze which will help hugely. This is why Italians decamp en masse from the cities to the sea or the Alps or Dolomites as soon as they can.

I just read in the U.K. papers about the red alert for the heat. We’ve had this for the last 20 or so years, it’s not new. Every summer there is allarme rosso in the news. 2003 was a scorching summer, it was 40° in Milan at the end of June then, I think I spent most of the time naked (when not at work of course).

If you go down towards the Maremma (much further south) there are lots of umbrella pine forests, which are lovely and cool. I think you’re wise to avoid Florence, it’s always really hot there for some reason. Siena is a bit better but the main piazza is in the sun most of the day. Depending on how far you are maybe visit in the evening.

if you do stay near the coast maybe visit Saturnia thermal baths? It’s public so doesn’t cost much (there is also a posh resort but you can ignore) but they do fill up so get there early. You can buy the mud to take away with you as well.https://www.termedisaturnia.it/

Hoppinggreen · 15/07/2023 19:10

We are in The North of Italy and it’s fine, we are quite high up so have a lovely breeze and good aircon.
I am glad not to be in Rome or similar though

SpicyTinkle · 15/07/2023 19:14

Just got on a plane leaving Italy after a 2 week break. It's been hot AF. We had a lovely villa, which was a good job as it was too hot to really do anything until much later on in the evening.

SpicyTinkle · 15/07/2023 19:14

We were in Puglia. Beautiful, but hotter than hell.

mirmc · 15/07/2023 19:16

Wondering would the weather still be warm in the likes of Sicily for the October midterm break Ours is 1st week November and Canaries etc are crazy price as usual

Pinkywoo · 15/07/2023 19:24

While we were in Sicily last July it got to 45 degrees and was unbearably humid. Since marrying Sicilian DH I laugh when people complain the UK is humid! Just stay indoors between 11-2, drink as much as you can and wear a massive hat.

Well the record breaking temperatures are the main reason it might be.
