Do I need air con in Paris in August?

Looking at Olympics accommodation for next summer. Excruciatingly expensive!!

I’m concerned that the we will cook without air con. I’ve no concept of summer in Paris as I’ve never been that time of year. It’s for early August.

What are others’ experiences? Thanks.

Paris in August is very hot, so much so wealthy Parisians leave for the month and head for the coast. I would say you definitely would want air con.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 15/07/2023 09:36

Yes.

Paris can be HOT in August. It’s the month that most of the city closes down and heads to the countryside or coast.

Of course, it’s northern Europe so it can also be cold and wet at anytime but I lived survived there through a heatwave so I am a big fan of air conditioning. I remember wanting to go out and about and do stuff but I wasted days inside starfishing on the floor trying to cool down.

Thanks both. It looks like a hotel will be better then as hardly any of the (cheaper) apartments have air con. I was keen to be central so we can enjoy the whole Parisian atmosphere but the prices are astronomic!

Yes. Paris is unbearable in august

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMeAgain · 15/07/2023 09:42

I agree, 100% essential.

Urghh hopefully not, as we’re there for 5 days!

Paris isn't that hot in August if you look at the stats. Average high of about 25. There have been a few freakishly hot spells in the last few summers, so for that reason I'd go for aircon, but in normal summers - if such a thing exists now - it's not unbearable.

Some Parisians come to where we are in the summer. It's actually hotter here than Paris, so I think it's as much about escaping the city as evading the heat.

LlynTegid · 15/07/2023 10:22

I needed it last July, cannot imagine it is any different in August.

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMeAgain · 15/07/2023 12:08

I think it’s more the average will be driven up soon with the constant spikes. We were in Paris July 2019 and it hit 40. We went back last summer and it was 32/33. Granted the following week it was 24/25 but I wouldn’t take the chance with no air conditioning.

TizerorFizz · 15/07/2023 13:45

Global warming is pushing up European temperatures. Of course Paris is expensive during the Olympics! And very likely hot! What did you expect??? Stay further out and commute.

OldHouseLover · 15/07/2023 16:04

We're in Paris right now & the temps are ranging between 21 - 32 degrees these past 2 weeks. Our apartment doesn't have aircon but we have fans & windiest & its totally fine

FoodieToo · 15/07/2023 16:40

We were in Paris on Monday and Tuesday . The air con was not working in one of the hotel rooms .
It was horrendous 🙈!
Don’t book anything without air con .

Caspianberg · 15/07/2023 17:50

Actually, you should be fine in older apartments. They are built to stay cool.

We live in southern Europe. It’s currently a furnace outside. But inside house and most buildings it’s fine as they are built with thick walls, large roof overhangs and awnings. We don’t, and I don’t know anyone who has air con at home. It’s mainly offices etc like in uk.

Maddy70 · 15/07/2023 18:17

It's hot

redfacebigdisgrace · 16/07/2023 00:57

Thanks everyone! I’ll keep looking for aircon or an older apartment with good air flow.

@TizerorFizz are you having a bad day? I‘m not sure why you posted on the thread as you didn’t add anything helpful. FYI I haven’t been to Paris in the summer before so I wasn’t sure about the heat and how hot it actually feels versus the thermometer temperature. it’s currently not that hot. Secondly yes of course I was expecting pricey but not £2k plus per night for a central aircon Airbnb . 🤷‍♀️

Sorry they advice to staying further out was not helpful. I’m also amazed you didn’t think it would be ludicrous prices. Or potentially hot! It’s what everyone is talking about right now. I guess you just don’t like hearing the obvious. But good luck anyway. We loved all the events we went to in London.
