If you open a Chase account and add some money you can add it to Apple Pay and won’t be charged for foreign transactions.

You will get 1% cashback on what you spend and 1% interest on what you don’t.

Yes, I think the Chase card is the current best recommendation. I wouldn't only have one card though as you'll be stuck if you lose it, or it's stolen - Barcelona has a bit of a reputation for pickpockets although I've never had a problem and been there a few times.

I'd have a spare card back at the hotel and make sure I can access money, as well as boarding passes etc without my phone, ie have print outs of everything.

Don't buy food and drink, or anything on Las Ramblas unless you want to pay lots - everything is very expensive.

If you're with HSBC look at HSBC global money which is an app and card you preload for minimal fee.

We have a Starling account. Their debit card can be used all over Europe with no extra charges. As soon as you pay the app pings with the payment. The exchange rate was brillant. In June we were getting €1.16+ to the £, best elsewhere €1.14. I think you can add it to Apple pay, personally I prefer to use the card as I can't stand the faffing about with the phone, and there is the risk if drained battery.

I have a Starling card too but since getting a Chase card it’s only used for backup. Unlike Chase, it doesn’t give cashback on purchases and the interest on credit in your account is a paltry 0.05%. Chase also pings.
