Holidays suitable for poor mobility

SouthCoastShell · 12/07/2023 23:03

My husband has recently been diagnosed with MS and has poor mobility.
We are currently on holiday in Cornwall (booked before we knew) and he's really struggling with walking with a cane and using a wheelchair.
Quite a lot has been un accessible
We would love any advice for our next holiday.

Would you fly? Maybe the Netherlands, one of the smaller cities?

@SouthCoastShell this site may be a useful starting point 😊

Depends on your age. If over 50 you could try a Saga cruise. They have a chauffeur service to pick you up at home (and back again obvs) and the actual ships are well run for folk with reduced mobility. At ports you can hire taxis to do the touristy thing at your own pace.

SouthCoastShell · 12/07/2023 23:13

Thanks for that 👍

We are both just over 50 so I will look into this thanks

Most cruise lines are fairly good with reduced mobility though accessible cabins are limited so you need to book far ahead. Spanish resorts can be pretty good too as they have many older mobility impaired visitors

Thanks I wondered if a cruise might suit us. I will have a look at Spain

I know someone with MS who has had a good time on cruises - it’s a good way of getting about but without much effort!

She’s got an instagram page with videos of places they’ve visited around the UK as well: https://instagram.com/scoottheroute?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

Somewhere with a big long seafront promenade like Brighton

Make sure you get a blue badge for easy parking near to places of interest.

Family have just come back from Santa Elulia in Ibiza and it was great for them - one wheelchair user and one mobility scooter.

Mrsjayy · 13/07/2023 08:47

Hire a scooter wherever you go access Is going to be a bit of a pain if you are after UK holiday I like Dorset it's quite easy to get around. I've only been once to Cornwall it's so hilly in places and not particularly accessible ime.

The thought of going abroad now feels quite daunting but thanks for the recommendation

One was requested a few weeks ago but I've heard they take a while

Definitely look in to mobility scooters. I have one that fits in the car boot that we found on Facebook marketplace for a good price; alternatively lots of shopping centres and tourist attractions hire them out. I enjoy going to nature reserves that have big off road Trampers, they're great fun!

I've had MS for 20 years.

They can take an age to come in a few weeks chase it up,

As someone who is disabled after brain hemorrhage and who has other health issues thdg will never go away thank you all,!!

hartof · 13/07/2023 09:48

There is a company called disabled holidays and they will help you with everything. Look for them online

helpfulperson · 13/07/2023 10:00

I took my mum to various cities in Netherlands and Belgium. Flat, compact and with good public transport as well as lots of outdoor cafes when you need a seat. Would a mobility scooter be a possibility- you get lightweight ones that go in the boot of a car or on an airplane.
