Cottage recommendations in Scotland

Hi, I am looking for a cottage in Scotland for a short break over the summer, if you have been to a lovely one, could you please kindly recommend? It's for two adults and two children. Top priority is cleanliness. Not too fuss about the exact location, though somewhere quiet with beautiful views would be great. Thank you very much!

Scotland is a big place! Even if you’re not set on a specific area - factors like how you’re getting there, how long you want to spend travelling etc would be important to consider. E.g if you’re driving from SE England it’s quite a different prospect to go to Loch Lomond compared to the NE of Scotland. What sort of things would you like to do when you’re in Scotland? There are holiday cottages all over so perhaps find the rough locations that work and then take it from there?

@Wiennetta Thank you, think Isle of Skye could be one of our considerations. Somewhere by the coast would be lovely.

@HirplesWithHaggis Thank you very much, would take a look.

I would move this to Scotsnet, and also google holiday cottages in Scotland - there are lots of websites with a good selection in all price ranges. Reviews are usually available.
You really do need to pin down area a bit though. At over 30,000 sq miles, Scotland comprises a third of the total UK land area, and about half of it is infested with midges all summer!

Also, Skye gets rammed every summer - you need to book well ahead if you want somewhere decent.

XXYY · 04/07/2023 16:59

@Babdoc Thank you for your reply 🙂, got it.

I really want to keep this one quiet so don't pass it on, but Barracks Cottage in Glenelg is lovely. It has views of Skye and you can take the ferry across on calm days, or drive around to the Skye Bridge.

East coast is better during midge season, and we love the Moray Firth. Particular favourite is Findhorn, and we stayed in this lovely cottage one year:

I’d agree about voiding Skye, it’ll be packed to the rafters. I’d recommend the East Neuk of Fife. There are cute little sea-side villages, coastal walks, boat trips and St Andrews, Edinburgh and Dundee are within striking distance. Sorry I can’t recommend accommodation.

Exasperatednow · 04/07/2023 18:46

Budget and how many bedrooms?

midsomermurderess · 04/07/2023 18:46

To void Skye might not be such a bad idea. ‘Avoid’ obvs.

VanCleefArpels · 04/07/2023 18:48

How are you getting there and from where?

Hopeless to say somewhere in Scotland near the sea! That takes you from Berwick to Aberdeen to Inverness to Ayrshire to Dumfries and everywhere in between

twistyizzy · 04/07/2023 18:51

You will be lucky to get one for this year! We usually book 6 months in advance

XXYY · 04/07/2023 19:11

Thank you all for the useful information, much appreciated! Driving from North East England. 1 or 2 bedrooms for 2 adults and 2 kids. Budget around GBP100 per night. Will look into your recommendations, thanks a million!

I fear your budget is unrealistic unless you go for a budget hotel

£100 per night won't get you a halfway decent cottage in summer

lochmaree · 04/07/2023 19:54

Cairnhapple house. have stayed here a few times and it's lovely.

I think that budget will be stretching it for 2 bedrooms in summer. You might be lucky and get something if you wait till after Scottish schools go back mid August and avoid anywhere within travelling distance of Edinburgh during the Festival. Sorry.

We have had a couple of cracking places from here but honestly they'll struggle with that budget in high season.

BathTangle · 04/07/2023 20:19

Might work depending on the ages of your children? https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/35518556?source_impression_id=p3_1688498094_fFWdncTdoiZa80Tl

We loved boat of garten. There's a number of privately owned lodges and mobile homes, the one we rented was immaculate and ideal for 2 adults 2 children. I booked through booking.com
