Pyrenees in a day

We are staying near Carcassonne for a week and would like to take a road trip through/ around the Pyrenees one day.
It’s such a vast area with so many sites I’m not sure where to start. We’d love to see some castles and some amazing views.
Understandably, most of the itineraries are for several days worth of travel. What would be your ‘Pyrenees essentials in a day’ route?

Najac is lovely and has a fortress.

Lourdes is lovely and has a chateau
With goood reviews

Have you looking into : These five Cathar Castles are known as the cinq fils de Carcassonne, the Five Sons of Carcassonne:
• Château d'Aguilar.
• Château de Peyrepertuse.
• Château de Puilaurens.
• Château de Quéribus.
• Château de Termes.

Or now about Collioure? And the summer palace for the kings of Mallorca?
On my list to visit.

Have you visited the chateau of raine Margot in saint project? Worth a trip.

MindfulBear · 02/07/2023 23:29

How about Ax les thermes ? Caves and the poools!

cherryassam · 02/07/2023 23:38

Chateau de Montségur is also worth a visit, another Cathar castle. About a half hour very steep hike from car park to the castle, but fabulous views await at the top.

Also came on to say Lourdes. I was really disappointed in Carcassonne when I went. Toulouse is lovely.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/07/2023 23:43

Givarnie is stunning.

Branleuse · 02/07/2023 23:46

Id do a cathar country tour. I love some of the little villages around that area a bit more into the foothills of the pyrenees. Esperaza, alet les bains. Amelie les bains i remember being nice too a bit further in. Its my favourite part of france .

Thank you for all of the suggestions. We are flying in to Toulouse early morning so will spend a day there. Montségur is in the right sort of direction from where we are staying, although I’m not sure I can convince the kids to hike up there so will send DH up while they nap. The yellow train looks great fun, it’s just such a journey to get to the start point even so adds another few hours on to the day.
I think I massively underestimated the distance between everything there!

@ReleasetheCrackHen can you do this yellow train both up and down the mountain on one day. I’ve tried to provisionally reserve tickets for a random day in next week as we aren’t travelling til late summer and it’s not clear at all.

I suspect you are not the only one...from the Carcassonne side of Toulouse I'd be wary of Lourdes or the likes of Givarnie for a day trip.

I'd think about heading south for Chateau de Montsegur, then if you want to actually get into mountains proper there are stunning views to be had by going even further south, maybe even fit in a drive over the Col de Pailheres, then head for the likes of Ax-Les-Thermes and Tarascon, then either Foix (another nice castle) and/or head towards Massat via the Col de Port for more views.

If you run out of time/steam at any point it's fairly easy to get back to the Carcassonne area via the Autoroute than runs north out of Tarascon then Foix, rather than go back the slow way through the mountains.

HTH.

Sorry for the long delay, work got in the way of holiday planning 😁
I’ve decided that France is definitely much bigger than I had considered so have an all day trip mapped out (with the addition of Foix/ Massat if we have time) and another half day excursion to the south of us traveling through Esperaza etc to Chateau de Peyrepertuse.
I’d love your thoughts?

We stayed in Limoux last year and toured round some of the Cathar castles - don't underestimate how far apart they are or how long to travel between each, including time to climb up and down again. We did Limoux to Montsegur one day, had lunch in the village in a little restaurant with a garden, and then climbed up the hill. Fantastic view from the top. You could combine it with somewhere like Alet Les Bains to see the abbey, or Mirepoix which is a walled town - bit touristy but very old and pretty.

Otherwise Queribus and Peyrepetuse would give you a great view of the Pyrenees and down towards Perpignan. Don't try Gavarnie/Lourdes - really too far and lots of other places to explore closer to Carcassonne.

stringbean · 14/08/2023 14:58

Also, Limoux is the home of sparkling wine - it pre-dates champagne, so a great opportunity for wine-tasting there if that's your thing. The abbey at St Hilaire was stunning and very peaceful - also worth a visit and not far from Limoux.

OK, looks like a full day...if I had one comment to make it would be that the mountains don't really ramp up until Foix and your route (if you are going anti-clockwise) then has you running along the bottom of the Ariege valleyd - ecent roads and quite spectacular but you won't get broader picture/wider horizons until you climb up out of Ax-Les-Thermes towards Belcaire.

There are a couple of ski resorts off that route, Plateau de Beille (near Les Cabannes) or Bonascre (near Ax LT) from where you might get some good views but they are a decent drive off that route so you might not have time.

Massat is also, as you have guessed, a bit of a diversion, though if you take the road towards Massat from Tarascon sur Ariege but only go as far as the Col de Port or just beyond, there are good views to be had.

Oh, and if you do decide to go to Plateau de Beille be warned the only restaurant up there burnt down in the spring.....

HTH
