Does anyone else find the Caribbean to be disappointing?

Trying our third island in the Caribbean, and this will be our last. We’ve done Grenada which was nice. We did St Lucia which we didn’t like due to being hassled constantly. We came back from Antigua a few weeks ago and it was fine.

I always picture the Caribbean to be beautiful and unspoiled, friendly. But we find service to be really lacking, and often the beaches quite dirty.

Depends what you are expecting...

I've been to Domican Republic with a toddler and just myself. I can't understand how anybody books the Carribean and complains about the poverty it's a 3rd world country and no welfare system! Its beautiful and as a tourist if you have money you can have a fab hotel. The beach in Punta cana was spotless and I've done Negril in Jamaica also and the beach was the best I've been to in the world... poverty level similar of not worse in Jamaica.

Not done other islands as they are so expensive but I'd love to.

This. What a strange thing to insinuate. And where did the “smiling fools” bit come from??!?

I agree. There is so much to do in Barbados. If you judge Barbados by an all inclusive resort you definitely did it wrong.

St Lucia and The Virgin Islands are my favourites because of the beautiful beaches and so much to do. I also loved Cuba, Jamaica and Grand Caymen. Dominican Republic is my least favourite but I would still go back.

I didn’t like the Dominican Republic either, in fact I couldn’t wait to leave. I’ve only ever hated two holiday destinations, the other was Gambia, a God awful place.
