Hi everyone. Looking for ideas of a week away with my husband. September after children go back to school is my preference.
Where can I get a good deal staying in a hotel, flights no more than 3 hours away. Have traveled around Europe but feel there's a bargain to had somewhere.
Also since Brexit is there anything I need to carry for checks at all now?
Thank you for any ideas.

We are doing Ibiza in Sept as the flight times plus value for money is good and decent weather expected (obviously can't fully predict that) :) enjoy!

Majorca has big beaches, sights, interesting towns .
are you after a lie on the beach / poolside or something with activity?

DustyLee123 · 29/06/2023 09:33

We went to Turkey one September and the weather was great, so I think Greece would be ok too.

We had a week in Portugal last autumn - started in Porto, got the train inland (along the river, beautiful journey), stayed in a Quinta for a couple of nights, then back to Porto. Highly recommend.

What kind of holiday are you after though - 1 location, relax and chill; city break; active holiday; travelling around/sightseeing...? That would narrow it down a lot.

Sorry should have said we're not beachy people although like a good view of the sea. City breaks are fine.

Not been to Ibiza. Any particular bit you'd recommend?

Has anyone stayed in Old Benidorm? Can't imagine I'd like the newer bits but have heard good things about the older end!

We’re off to Tenerife, plenty of things for all types of couples. Quiet areas or busy nightlife etc. weather in September is great, 4 hours flight but transfer only 30 minutes away

Lovetotravel123 · 29/06/2023 13:30

A little tour of Andalusian towns? You could do Malaga, Granada and Seville.

Caspianberg · 29/06/2023 13:31

How about Budapest
Not a beach vibe, but there’s lots to see and do.

Vanillalime · 29/06/2023 23:33

Lisbon is a good city break. You could go to Sintra and/or Cascais for a few days.

Nice is also lovely. You could take the train to Monaco or to the lovely villages along the coast.

TizerorFizz · 29/06/2023 23:45

Nice is great. Train along the coast gives good access to other towns. Plus hire a car and go into the hills above Nice. Really beautiful. Not bargain basement though! At all.

Cheap has to be Eastern Europe. Not sure actual bargains exist. I also think basing yourselves in Bologna gives wonderful options too. Definitely consider Portugal and Seville, Cordoba and Granada. We also have friends who enjoyed a week exploring around Bordeaux and Britney is always lovely. Quieter in Sept - but that’s no bad thing.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/06/2023 09:12

Portugal is supposed to be one of the cheaper places to visit and there's a decent amount of flights available.

Lisbon is on a large river, but you can take a short train journey to a proper beach resort.

Alicante, Malaga or Barcelona would also be good choices.

We were really surprised at how (relatively) cheap it was to eat and drink in Portugal. Drinking especially. Wine was so reasonable - I guess because it's local, and it must be taxed very differently. It was a very pleasant surprise.

I've booked a week in Provence for September although Eurostar and TGV not flying.

Found what looks like a very nice apartment in Avignon for about 250 Euros. Planning on also visiting Nimes, Aix, Remy, possibly Marseilles/Cassis, Pont du Gard. This is all accessible by public transport.

You can't go really go wrong with France even if you end up spending the whole time reading and eating.

Grrrpredictivetex · 30/06/2023 11:42

Thanks everyone some really nice ideas here. Will definitely be off somewhere ✈️ happy holidays 🌞

That sounds lovely! We did central France by train in May. The journey from Paris to our destination was so nice - really fast, comfortable train. Hardly any stops, great views... Relatively cheap too (compared with train travel here, anyway).

Slovenia. You could spend a day or 2 in Ljubljana then stay around Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj (I prefer the latter).
We also took the train to the south of France this year. Had a great time.

midsomermurderess · 30/06/2023 17:56

Extramadura. You could fly to Madrid and take a fast train to Cáceres. It’s a very interesting part of Spain, an area where several of the conquistadors came from. Makes a bit of a change from the obvious Spanish destination Seville, Granada etc.

Went to Tours in April - weather wasn't perfect but we managed.

French trains are very good although finding the cheapest prices can be a bit complicated. And when one journey did go wrong the service was pretty awful.

But I could probably go to France for every holiday without being too bothered. Beautiful places to visit, reasonably cheap and of course the food..

City on the water, great food, great culture and very inexpensive hotels etc. - Istanbul. I went for 3 days but could have spent a week there easily.
