Spanish City Breaks

Looking for ideas. Don't want a beach holiday.
Where have you been in Spain for a city break? Apart from Barcelona?

If not Spain, can you recommend a city break elsewhere in Europe?

I love Seville, Valencia and Cadiz
Outside Spain how about Munich or Nuremberg?

EVHead · 28/06/2023 16:45

Malaga is lovely. Interesting historical sites, good restaurants, nice shops.

gratedhalloumi · 28/06/2023 16:47

Andalusia looks beautiful.. never been though

Iamnotworthy · 28/06/2023 16:50

Would recommend
Seville
Malaga (bonus being it's by the sea as well)
Jerez
Cadiz.
San Sebastián is next on my list.
If you fancy Portugal, Lisbon and Porto are lovely.

Iamnotworthy · 28/06/2023 16:51

Elsewhere in Europe, you won't go far wrong in Italy! Rome, Venice, Florence...

Crikeyalmightey · 28/06/2023 16:58

Thinking maybe Seville or Malaga. We have been to Lisbon and loved it.

Thanks for your posts. Now going to do some research..... Ooh, San Sebastian, not thought of there. 😊

Valencia - beach , old town , large arts and science complex located in the old river bed which is a huge park now , bioparc , lovely restaurants and bars .
Sitges - not far from Barcelona so can nip into Barcelona on the train for the day . Beaches , bars , restaurants , prominent gay community , if you time it right they have some spectacular festivals that happen for days at a time through the streets , always felt very safe there .
Enjoy wherever you choose x

Madrid is lovely spring or autumn- very hot in the summer. Bilbao is nice as is San Sebastián.

rumnraisinrocks · 28/06/2023 17:29

We went to Seville earlier this year and it was fabulous. Cadiz and San Sebastian are next on our list

Chersfrozenface · 28/06/2023 17:32

Seville
Granada
Jerez and Ronda too, if you can fit them in
A friend who lives in Salamanca says it's lovely

Aurora2023 · 28/06/2023 17:33

Palma is my all time favourite city holiday. We stay in the old town and it's magical and 20 mins from airport. And if you fancy a little beach trip - 20 mins on the bus €1 each way. Love it.

JaninaDuszejko · 28/06/2023 17:33

In Spain I've been to Malaga, Granada and Madrid. All great but we loved Malaga, it feels so relaxed as a holiday destination but there's lots to do beyond the beach, there's some fantastic art galleries and historical sites and lots of good places to eat.

Keep telling DH that when we retire we should go to Andalucia for a month and travel round and soak up the culture. I love it.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 28/06/2023 17:33

Almeria and Bilbao are small but nice and off the beaten track a bit

cherryassam · 28/06/2023 17:53

There are so many nice Spanish city breaks - but be warned many of them are brutally hot in the summer. Much nicer in spring or autumn in my experience, but I realise some people really like the heat.

We’ve Enjoyed:

Cadiz
Seville
Malaga
Granada (can easily do all of those as a nice multi-site trip)
Barcelona
Valencia
Palma (Mallorca)
Bilbao
Madrid

We’ve got San Sebastián, Santander, Salamanca and Cordoba on our want to do at some point lists

ReviewingTheSituation · 28/06/2023 17:57

Malaga, combined with Grenada for the Alhambra.

Or Porto (not Spain, but close). If you've got a few days, take a train trip along the Douro valley and stay in a Quinta for a couple of nights. We did that in November and it was fab!

Seville is high on my hit list, but apparently it is pretty hot (with its own microclimate), so I'd only do that well out of the main season.

ReviewingTheSituation · 28/06/2023 17:59

If you want somewhere smaller than a city, Frigiliana is fab - fly to Malaga and it's an easy drive along the coast and then in a bit. It's a very pretty town indeed, and lots of great places close by to explore - lovely 'white villages', and a great coastline too.

Superdupes · 28/06/2023 18:03

Palma or Malaga for me in Spain. Outside Spain Italy is so beautiful and there's so much choice, you can't really go wrong. Otherwise I've particularly liked Budapest, Dubrovnik. Prague, Porto - or Istanbul for something a bit different.

piscis · 28/06/2023 18:03

I am from Spain. My favourite city, which is not visited by as many tourists as others in Andalusia is Cordoba. So, so beautiful, specially if you go in May and visit The patios festival.

It depends on when you are planning to go though. I wouldn't go to Andalusia in summer, it's hot like hell, definitely not to Seville or Cordoba. I was there once in August and it was 47 degrees.

I am from the north (Galicia region) and Santiago de Compostela is a very beautiful monumental city, food is great in that region, lots of seafood and fish. Temperatures in summer are milder and not too cold in winter, but rains a lot!

cathyandclare · 28/06/2023 18:06

Pamplona, San Sebastián and Toledo are all lovely

cathyandclare · 28/06/2023 18:08

Outside Spain we really liked Ljubljana in Slovenia

Powerplant · 28/06/2023 18:08

Antequera about 50 mins north of Malaga and close to stunning lake beaches.

Frenchfancy · 28/06/2023 18:11

Malaga is great.

For France La Rochelle is lovely, and I just got back from a weekend in Nice which was really great, much better than Barcelona for example.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 28/06/2023 18:20

We’re currently staying in the hills north of Alicante. Went into the city today and explored the old town. Was lovely - loads of tapas bars and restaurant and some seriously impressive yachts in the marina.

I second all of these. If I had to pick a favourite it would be Seville. They're all lovely though.

Northern Spain is just so beautiful. San Sebastián amazing beaches and food. Culture and urban history in Bilbao. We loved Santiago one the world most magnificent gothic cities.

Deffo agree with Porto over the border.

And Palma. It's just so easy to get there and explore.
