Last name booking not matching passport (but does match driving license)

I'm flying in a couple of days on EasyJet (to Spain) and just realised that I must have used auto-fill, or something, when making the booking cos my last name is wrong. My last name on my passport is a non-hyphenated double barrel (eg. Jane Jones Smith), but for some inexplicable reason I booked as Jane Smith. I only just noticed when I went to download my boarding pass. It will cost me more than the flght originally cost to change it (£110).

However, my driving licence is in 'Jane Smith'. My credit cards are 'Jane Smith'. Just my bloody passport is 'Jane Jones Smith'.

Do you think they'll let me on the plane (becuase I do have official ID - my driving license - that matches the name on the booking)?

I did something similar a few years ago and was forced to pay £100 to correct the name on the booking. But the error was more egregious - I booked under my married name forgetting that my relevant passport was still in my (totally different) maiden name.

In your shoes id actually be tempted to risk it in the hopes that no would would notice , or be overly concerned about, the discrepancy. But I guess it's better to resolve it properly in advance...

There is a technical difference between last name and surname in your situation - if the booking asked for last name and your surname is not hyphenated then you can technically use just the last name in your name.

A genius in technicality. easyJet ask for 'Last Name' I just checked.

Then hopefully OP will be ok!! she just needs to keep repeating “this is my LAST name” and hope the airport staff are aware and not too ‘computer says no’ about it.

Legally it is a thing. I know this because I very purposely gave my child a double barreled surname with no hyphen, so now when I fill in forms for DC it can be first name and (my) last name (ignoring their father’s “contribution” - and for good reason!)

Yeah, but I think it technically says 'your name on booking and on your passport must match exactly'

I think it is legally a thing, because for some reason I put my driving license just in the second part of my last name (i.e. Jane Smith). So, I weirdly have two legal forms of ID with (slightly) different last names.

But actually actually you might be on to something. I just checked my passport and the wording there is 'surname' (which for me is Jones Smith). But Easyjet booking says 'last name', which for me is technically 'Smith'.

I think I may be ok!

The genius is that the names do match - the last name on the booking is exactly the same as the last name on the passport. The booking requires the last name. The fact that there’s an additional name doesn’t matter as it is second to last and not last…

looking forward to finding out if OP boards successfully or not! (I need to get a life)

because I have my mother’s surname (2), my father’s (3) and my husband’s (1). My children have mine too and I love that.

Tetchypants · 03/07/2023 00:12

Did you get to Spain @Flockameanie?

Marchintospring · 03/07/2023 04:15

@Flockameanie Op, what happened?

Bewilderedandhurt · 03/07/2023 07:28

If you are self checkin then I'm sure it will be fine.
We recently travelled with Ryanair and my sons birth year was in as 2023 instead of 2015. No body even checked.
The fact that the name is correct but only half of the double barrel surely will be fine. You can verify with your driver licence too. I wouldn't worry.

JeminaSunshine · 03/07/2023 18:49

Hope you got there

Flockameanie · 05/07/2023 14:51

I did!

But I had a micro heart attack when the guy at the gate took a loooong time looking at my passport said ‘ok’ then said ‘oh…..’. Cue my heart stopping. Then he said… ‘ok’. The whole thing probably took about 45 seconds, but it felt like 4 hours!

Now I just have to hope they let me on the plane home!

I realised whilst away that my flight booking and passport had different first names - booking had short version, passport long version. Like Sue / Susan. I’d obviously got out of the country ok and I got back ok as well

I think this is quite common especially when it's an obvious derivative like Sue / Susan. I know a Christopher that's pootled around Europe as Chris for years without ever being stopped.

I'm more of a Andrea / Drew type nickname though so doubt it'd fly for me (pun intended).
