Manchester Airport - Taking liquids in cabin luggage

MagpiePi · 27/06/2023 12:00

I am due to fly out of Manchester with Ryanair so am only taking cabin baggage.

Manchester Ariport security says this about taking containers with liquids:

Please note - if you wish to bring your own containers to hold 100ml or less, the container must have printed on it the measurement that the container can hold. Travel sets of containers that do not have measurements on them will not be allowed through security. Handwritten measurements or stickers are also not acceptable.

Is this true? I can't use those travel bottles that you can buy?

Can you not just use travel sized toiletries that are already the correct size? I've never decanted anything into a clear container. Or buy larger toiletries after security.

Or find clear containers that have the measurements on them

I've flown through Manchester airport many times with 'travel sets' that I don't think have the measurements printed on them, or it's probably worn off, because I've been using them since shortly after the liquids ban came in, which has to be 10-15 years now.

No-one has ever looked at them closely enough to see if they have the volume printed on them. I'd probably carry on using them and if they get taken off me, I'll just replace the items in Boots after security.

The only time I've seen security taking any interest in small containers (as opposed to them confiscating full size toiletries or other items that are obviously too big) was when a group of them were closely examining a set of snow globes that a man was trying to take through.

He'd probably bought them as presents for his DC and they wanted to take them off him Sad. Hopefully he'd have been given the option to post them back if they wouldn't let them through security.

If you want to know if the info is correct or out of date, contact the airport. I wouldn't risk them not deciding to stick to their published guidelines based on what other people have experienced.

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 27/06/2023 13:12

I don't know about the containers but they were giving tedious lectures to anyone whose clear plastic bag wasn't sealable when we went through. It slowed everyone down. So save yourself that pain if you can and use a ziploc bag.

MagpiePi · 27/06/2023 13:12

I have some specific toiletries that I want to take and don't particularly want to spend more money on toiletries at the airport, assuming that they sell them there.

I'll contact MA directly and see what they say.

I took through some travel bottles with decanted shampoo and conditioner through security a couple of weeks ago. No label on them anymore, they are obviously small and contain less than 100ml of liquid in each. You’ll be fine so long as your plastic bag does up and is not too big.

NannyR · 27/06/2023 13:26

You can buy refillable bottles that have the size embossed on them - I have some I bought from IKEA.

MagpiePi · 27/06/2023 13:38

I reckon I'll chance it with the bottles I have.

I've been through loads (including a couple of weeks ago) with clear travel bottles and never had an issue.

Buying travel sized toiletries for the sake of it is not only a waste of money but bad for the environment too!

Svalberg · 27/06/2023 14:02

I've had a container without the volume on it confiscated, at Heathrow

Same, but make sure the bag fastens. It was the only thing they checked last week

I have some refillable silicone containers. They do have the volume embossed on them but it’s not obvious. I’ve flown through Manchester with them 3x and not been asked. The fill volume of the largest container is 80mL though so perhaps it’s obvious as it goes through the scanner.

MissAmbrosia · 27/06/2023 22:31

As long as they fit in the tiny bag they allow you should be fine. I travelled all over bloody Europe with the same zip lock bag but Manchester airport gave me a new tiny one and I had to bin my toothpaste and other stuff. It was ridiculous.

I’ve got silicone Squeezy bottles too.

Thanks to everyone that’s replied, I’m overthinking it but I’m sure it’ll be ok!

Technically their rules are correct but in practice I've never seen it enforced.
